BP Adams to Call Again for a Burn Unit in Brooklyn, Following Death of Toddler in Brownsville

BP Eric Adams By MK Metz
This morning at the Howard Houses in Brownsville, site of yesterday's horrible fire that killed one-year-old Ivan Baez and injured six others, Borough President Eric Adams and other officials will be calling again for building Brooklyn’s first burn unit.

Many of the injured suffered from smoke inhalation that would have been treatable at a burn unit.

In an advance put out yesterday, Adams' office said he would note that Brooklyn had 8,518 structural fires last year — 31 percent of the citywide total. He'll talk about the urgent need for a burn unit when time is a critical factor.

Adams first called for a burn unit in Brooklyn in March of 2015, following the devastating deaths of seven siblings in a Midwood house fire; in that case, the mother and her lone surviving daughter were treated at two different hospitals in two different boroughs.

Joining Adams will be State Senators Jesse Hamilton and Kevin Parker as well as Assembly Member Latrice Walker.

It seems incredible that there is no burn unit in a borough of more than 2.6 million residents and growing.

We applaud Adams' initiative in the burn unit issue, and urge him to push for even more hospital beds and full-service emergency rooms in Brooklyn.

Signs Warn of Subway Pervert Riding Train in Brooklyn Heights

The Brooklyn Heights Clark Street subway station is plastered with these signs asking, "Have you seen this PERV riding the subway?"

The man pictured allegedly exposed himself to a 22-year-old woman on a 2 train as it entered Clark Street station. The man is described as black, age 25 to 35, with a goatee.

The notice was put out by the Guardian Angels PERV BUSTERS team at 718-649-2607 (PervBusters@GuardianAngels.com).

Perv Busters are an all-women team who have trained with Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, according to the Daily Mail.

Parking Solution for Over-the-Top Christmas Lights in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn?

It's holiday season again in Dyker Heights. The annual Christmas display, which gets more elaborate every year, is said to draw more than 100,000 visitors to Brooklyn from across the country.

This charming event draws so many tour buses, however, that police recently revoked parking privileges for locals along 86th Street between 11th and 13th Avenues from 5 p.m. to midnight. This drew quite an outcry from residents.

Now, according to Bensonhurst Bean, NYPD Brooklyn South Chief Steven Powers has decided to revise the controversial plan, and reserve only three bus lengths along 86th Street for buses.

A reasonable solution?

How to get to Dyker Heights and tips for your trip.
The creativity is amazing.

Ground zero for Christmas lights in Dyker Heights is between 81st and 83rd streets and 11 and 13 avenues. Commenters on Yelp say try to walk it if you can for the best experience.

Hillary Clinton Won Big In Brooklyn, Lost Big In Staten Island

Courtesy Clinton Campaign
Regardless of Hillary Clinton's performance nationally, she won solidly in Brooklyn.

According to NPR, Clinton won 79.7 percent of the Brooklyn vote, versus 17.9 percent for Trump. (Johnson got .9 percent of the vote while Stein won 1.5 percent. )

The ratio was roughly the same in Queens, with Clinton receiving 75.5 percent of the vote and Trump receiving 22.1 percent.

Clinton got even more of the vote in Manhattan (87.2 vs 10 percent) and the Bronx (88.7 vs 9.6 percent).

But the story was different in Staten Island, where Trump got 57.2 percent and Clinton received 40.4 percent of the vote.

In other races, Charles Schumer won re-election to the Senate, according to the Brooklyn Eagle.

The Eagle also tweeted that Nydia Velazquez has been re-elected to Congress.

Forest City Delays Pacific Park Brooklyn Over Real Estate Market Woes

Forest City Realty Trust suffered a net loss of $430.9 million for the three months ended September 30, 2016, mainly because of the Pacific Park mega-project.

The loss includes "an impairment of non-depreciable real estate of $307.6 million, primarily related to Pacific Park Brooklyn," FCR reports. (This is the Atlantic Yards project near Atlantic Terminal Mall.)

The company decided to revise the overall project schedule to "delay future vertical development."

Forest City blamed negative market conditions and timing. These include "the impact of increased apartment supply, uncertainty surrounding 421A tax abatement and continued escalation in construction and trade costs," the company said.

Three properties at Pacific Park Brooklyn that are part of the company's partnership with Greenland USA are still under construction:
  • 535 Carlton, a 298-unit, all-affordable apartment community, is expected to begin phased opening in the fourth quarter of 2016.
  • 550 Vanderbilt, a 278-unit condominium property, is expected to begin phased opening in the first quarter of 2017.
  • 38 Sixth Avenue, a 303-unit, all-affordable apartment community with 6,000 feet of street-level retail, is expected to begin phased opening in the second quarter of 2017

Harley Quinn Top Trending Halloween Costume in NYC, but in Missoula, It's "Pig"

Street art. Photo: MK Metz
Google's Freightgeist trends analysis app confirms what astute Halloween costume prognosticators had predicted: Batman super-villainess Harley Quinn is going to be EVERYWHERE during tonight's Halloween mayhem.

This is true not only in New York City but nationwide, where Harley Quinn rules as the number one costume search on Google. This includes cities as diverse as Miami, Richmond, El Paso and Salt Lake City.

In New York City, the second top-trending costume is the all-inclusive "Superhero." In third place is the "Joker," then "Wonder Woman" and "Witch."

While most of the country is dressing up like superheros or villains,  witches, clowns or cartoon characters like Minnie Mouse (oddly popular), some parts of these United States have some pretty quirky top costumes.

The weirdest state seems to be Montana. For example, the number one costume around Missoula, Montana is "Pig."

What the hell is going on up there?

In Great Falls, Montana, the top costume is "Flamingo."

Have those people ever even seen a flamingo?

Here's one that really has us stumped. The number one costume in Helena, Montana is "Gumball Machine."

We can imagine one or even two clever folks dressing up as gumball machines over in Helena. But the top costume in the whole town? Is there an army of gumball machines getting ready to march tonight in Helena? Should we be doing something about this?

Here are a few more that just seem a bit unusual as number one costume in the whole town:

Kirksville, Missouri: "Old Lady."
Sherman, Texas: "Shark."
Jonesboro, Arkansas: "Gangster."
Utica, NY: "Dalmation."
Tallahassee, Florida: "Disco."
