Spielberg film transforms Brooklyn Heights into DC

Correspondent Andrew Porter sent the above link (for which he thanks neighbor Steven Rosenstein)  about the filming going on in Brooklyn Heights over the past few days.

Published by wtop, the article starts: "You can spot a cavalcade of boxy Cadillacs lining the curb, and the street sign says 14th Street NW. But this isn’t actually D.C.’s famous strip in the 1970s.
It’s a New York City neighborhood temporarily sent through the time machine for an upcoming Steven Spielberg-directed movie...."

"The film 'Nor’easter' is set to star Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep as legendary Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and publisher Katherine Graham during the time the paper challenged the U.S. government for the right to publish the politically explosive Pentagon Papers in 1971."

Or it might be titled "The Post," as Deadline Hollywood has it.

"This explains the enormous stacks of a 1971 issue of The Washington Post I saw at a staging area on Clark Street.

I guess the guy wanted to use even more BH locations than he got to use in filming "Bridge of Spies."

Then there were the BH locations which stood in for Georgetown in "Burn After Reading." BH has been used way too much in filming movies and TV shows. I'm glad I don't have a car."

Helicopter Searches Brooklyn Heights with Searchlight

 This helicopter swept Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn Bridge Park and Cadman Plaza West with its searchlight very late Wednesday night.

The ConBody Prison Bus

 This bus belongs to the ConBody Prison-Style Bootcamp. Headquartered in a grafitti-strewn neighborhood on the Lower East Side, ex-cons teach members exercises -- one course for example, focuses on exercises suitable for a 9x6' cell.

Founder Coss Marte teaches the above course.

His blurb:

Brooklyn Officials Say Cops Will Catch Up with 2 Hit and Run Drivers

 Brooklyn Councilmembers Ydanis Rodriguez, Stephen Levin and Mark Treyger called for two hit-and-run drivers to turn themselves in while they still can.

Last weekend, 18-year old Alejandro Tello was killed by a driver in a white BMW SUV as he rode across the street on his skateboard in Gravesend.  27-year old Neftaly Ramirez was riding his bike when he was struck by what is believed to be a green private garbage truck.

Police are close to tracing the vehicles, officials said. At a press conference on Tuesday, as reported in the Brooklyn Eagle, Levin noted that there are "numerous businesses" along the Franklin Avenue stretch in Greenpoint. "There's no doubt in my mind that we will be able to see video evidence that will show what [garbage] company it was and some ID on that truck. "  

UPDATE: Police tracked the car down not too far from the scene of the fatal Gravesend crash, but they're still investigating who the driver was at the time of the fatal crash, DNA reports. Meanwhile,  the garbage truck in Greenpoint crash belongs to Action Carting and has New Jersey plates, police said.

Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival comes to Albee Square, Crown Heights, Brooklyn Bridge Park

The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival is throwing a party this week that includes a film festival, the Juice Hip Hop Exposition, a free block party, talks and, on July 15, the grand finale concert.

The Hip-Hop Institute takes place on July 12, 10am-7pm, at Medgar Evers College. The theme of the day/conference is “Speak The Truth." Discuss issues of empowerment, social justice, health & wellness, as well as entrepreneurship. The programming consists of lectures, panels, and various workshops.

On Thursday, July 13th*, stop by Albee Square for the Spread Love Block Party from 4-9pm. Dance as DJ Spinna and DJ Uncle Ralph McDaniels spin on the 1s and 2s; hang in the beer garden, and stick around for some giveaways from the festival.

The big highlight comes on July 15, with the grand finale concert in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Have You Seen Missing Brooklyn Man Victor Kruglyak?

A Silver Alert has been issued for Victor Kruglyak, an 82-year-old white man from Brightwater Court and Brighton 5th Street in Brooklyn. The missing has Alzheimer’s and dementia and may be in need of medical attention.

Kruglyak is 5'4" tall, 150lbs, with white hair. He is wearing a yellow t-shirt, brown shorts and a blue baseball hat.

Last Seen: Near Corbin Place and Oriental Boulevard in Brooklyn at approximately 10:00 AM on 7/10.

Dunkirk in 70mm Coming to Brooklyn

Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn will be installing a new 70mm projector in their largest theater, with Christopher Nolan’s DUNKIRK as the inaugural film to be presented in 70mm on July 20th. The Alamo Brooklyn is one of just six New York City theaters presenting DUNKIRK in 70mm, and the only Brooklyn theater to show in the format.

From Alamo:
DUNKIRK tells the true story of “The Miracle of Dunkirk” and the unparalleled heroism and selflessness that saved the lives of 330,000 Allied soldiers. Following the earliest disastrous British invasion of Europe, hundreds of thousands of Allied forces and members of high command found themselves trapped, surrounded by German forces and with the sea to their backs.

Enter the “Little Ships of Dunkirk,” a flotilla of 800 privately owned ferries, fireboats and fishing boats, which helped pluck the soldiers from the beaches and evacuate them safely across the Channel to Dunkirk.

DUNKIRK opens theatrically on July 20th. Tickets for DUNKIRK in 70mm are on sale now and can be purchased via the Alamo Drafthouse website .

Climbing Drills at Ladder Co. 118 in Brooklyn Heights

 Ladder Co. 118 practiced their ladder climbs at the Brooklyn Heights firehouse over the weekend.

The drill followed the very real July 4 fire in DUMBO when firefighters from Ladder Co. 118 scaled a six-story loft building at 57 Jay St. to extinguish a fire reported on a lower floor.

Coney Island Flicks On the Beach

Here's fun summer entertainment, and free: Coney Island Flicks on the Beach (presented by Alliance for Coney Island, and Amazon Studios).

On Mondays at 8:00 P.M. during July and August, a giant 40-foot inflatable screen turns the beach at West 10th Street into an outdoor movie theater.

What the July 4 Fireworks Looked Like from Brooklyn Heights

See the little red oval? If you look hard, you can see a little bit of New Jersey's fireworks, as seen from Brooklyn Heights.

The Jersey City Freedom and Fireworks Festival was supposed to take off from Liberty State Park, which would have made it visible from the Promenade and BBP. But those plans were changed when NJ's government shut down, along with its parks and beaches.

The NJ display was moved to Exchange Place, sadly out of sight from Brooklyn Heights.

Those lucky Heights folks with balconies facing north (on an upper floor) had views of the Macy's display, but since it was moved north to Midtown Manhattan, it couldn't be seen from the Promenade or Brooklyn Bridge Park, prime viewing in years past. It was visible from Greenpoint and Williamsburg, however.
