It's True About Moss Growing On the North Side of Trees, Even in Brooklyn












This tree at Fulton and Adams Streets in Downtown Brooklyn illustrates the idea that more moss grows on the north side of trees than on the south side.

The reason is that the south side gets more sun, and moss thrives in shade.

    Much of that green is lichens, rather than moss, but same principle.

    I've noticed that we have much more lichen growing around than we did back in the 1980s. This is an indicator of improving air quality, as lichens are intolerant of many kinds of air pollution.

    Thanks for letting us know. Looking at it again, we can see only a little bit of moss and mostly lichens, as you say. Very happy to hear the air is getting better. Wonder why? Less heavy industry in Brooklyn?
