Escaped the Tomato Blight So Far

We didn't expect to get any tomatoes this year because of the "explosive" spread of the dread tomato blight throughout the northeast. But we've had good luck so far -- not sure why -- and out little Brooklyn crop is still coming in. We have just three plants -- you can see the three varieties in the photo above -- and the tomatoes are delicious.

Our gardening neighbors haven't been so fortunate. The tomatoes rotted on the deck next door and according to the New York Times, farmers across the northeast are plowing under their diseased plants. Even Martha Stewart lost her tomatoes!

We're keeping our eyes open for the signs, which include "white, powdery spores; large olive green or brown spots on leaves; and brown or open lesions on the stems."

Until then, we're savoring every bite.
