First we learn that sugar is bad for you. Now scientists are saying that people growing marijuana indoors use 1 percent of the U.S. electricity supply, creating 17 million metric tons of carbon dioxide every year.
According to a report in the Denver Business Journal, authorized growers alone use $5 billion worth of energy. That works out to the output of seven big electric power plants. In Humboldt County, Calif., a center of marijuana production, per-person residential electricity use jumped 50 percent compared to other parts of the state after medical marijuana was legalized there in 1996.
