More than 2,200 people gathered in Cadman Plaza Park in Downtown Brooklyn Saturday for AFSP's (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) 2011 Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk. The walk, which took off at 7 p.m. and finished up at 4:30 a.m., is meant to create awareness about suicide and raise funds to help save lives.
All of the participants had been touched in some way by suicide. Many walked in memory of a friend or relative.
Candles in bags were lined up along the steps of the park to commemorate loved ones.
Many people wrote the names of relatives who committed suicide on the backs of their shirts.
The marchers carried glowing objects and wore colored beads that signified their relationship to those who died -- gold for a parent, orange for a sibling, red for a partner or spouse, purple for friends and other relatives, blue in support for the cause and green for those who live with depression.
