10 Things About Murdered Hasidic Brooklyn Slumlord Menachem Stark

Brooklyn slumlord Menachem “Max” Stark was kidnapped and thrown into a Dodge Caravan in Williamsburg late on Jan. 2.  His body was found -- suffocated and burned -- in a dumpster on Long Island the next day. (Photos of the funeral here. [JP Updates]) (Blurry video of his kidnapping here.)

The more that comes out, the more bizarre Stark's life and business dealings appear. Here are 10 things known so far:

- Stark owed tens of millions of dollars in defaulted real estate loans and owned "vermin-infested drug dens and slums, along with several tonier buildings in Williamsburg."  [Failed Messiah]

- He owed tens of thousands of dollars in penalties for 148 Department of Buildings violations on his 17 properties. [NY Post]

- Israel Perlmutter and Stark, principals of South Side House, LLC, were debtors in a Chapter 11 case worth $29 million.[Leagle] UPDATE: Make that $51 million. [TRD]

- Just hours before he was kidnapped, Stark had borrowed a half-million dollars from a business associate. [NY Post]

- He had a sealed arrest for "forcible touching” of a young girl. [NY Post]

- Typical review of his real estate company on Yelp: "Menachem Stark (aka Max Stark) and Israel Perlmutter (aka Sam Perl) are criminals and should not be trusted with your time or money."

- Stark, father of eight children, allegedly gave "generously" to Hasidic Jewish charities. [Failed Messiah]

- Stark had so many enemies that investigators say they almost don’t know where to start looking. [NY Post]

- PIX11 speculates NYPD will investigate Satmar and Lubavitch Jews in the murder.

- Stark was buried in Kiryas Joel on Saturday – meaning a full autopsy may not have been done. [Failed Messiah]

UPDATE: Police are looking at Stark's business partner as a possible suspect.

  1. Your sources are super creditable!! A trashy tabloid mag and an anti orthodox rant blog. Great journalism! Good for you!

  2. You referenced a 'sealed arrest' attributed to ny post, but this is a made up reference. There was no article indicating this.

  6. Hate and hate. Brutal murder isn't bothering the writer of these shameful comments. Sealed arrest warrants are rumors + plus does not innocent until proven guilty mean anything in modern journalism.

  12. A sealed arrest is sealed for a reason. Usually its something that cannot be proven, being that someone, often a child, made it up, and since it can't be ignored completely, its put into a sealed record, not public record.

  13. this is one nasty individual. Even if reports are exaggerated or unproven, half of what he has allegedly done puts him clearly in the ranks of the World's Scumbags.
That in no way justifies murder, but begs the question: where was law enforcement? What about the 148 violations? Unpaid fines? Foreclosure buybacks? Vile, arrogant abuse of business partners? How does a dirtbag like this one stay ahead of justice?

  14. Someone's tati died in a brutal way. Regardless this was something did out of hate. They set the man on fire holocaust style and destroy everyone's life around him that loved him. I hope the writer of this article and anyone else with judgement towards this man take a look at their perfect lives, good people don't have to trash others. Just imagine what the world will say when you or your loved one get murdered by being set on fire.

  16. A Brooklyn Daily Eagle article published on Dec. 13, 2005, reported about Starks' hotel: “The federal government yesterday filed a civil forfeiture complaint in U.S. Eastern District Court against the Greenpoint Hotel at 1100 Manhattan Avenue, after an investigation revealed extensive drug trafficking there. ... During the course of their investigation, DEA agents determined that at least 20 individuals had died in the hotel of probable drug overdoses.” http://www.brooklyneagle.com/articles/hasidic-leaders-praise-menachem-stark-business-dealings-come-under-scrutiny-2014-01-06

  17. I thought everything the post put out was very credible, the hasidim are very blinded and exploited by the likes of the now departed slumlord, just like those slumlords also exploits the tenants that pay them rent, this is a true fact that can't be hid. Notice how the other paper the ny daily news is trying to humanize him? I mean a nyc slumlord being humanized now? if that aint the pot calling the kettle black then I don't know what is then.

  18. With what is coming out about this upstanding member of the community. Why would anyone kill him. He seemed like an honest caring person. So he scammed everyone owed millions cheated people defaulted on loans. Had drug dens where as many as 20people may have died of drug overdoses with his knowledge and let them still live there. A sealed. Charge with h touchimg a girl. Loansharking borroring money from mobsters. Ect ect. Is that a reason to kill him. Hmm. I wouldnt but they say if you play with fire long enough. You will get burned

  20. guy sounds like a piece of work....why would anyone defend that kind of character with that kind of history. if 1/2 of the claims are lies, he still is up there in terms of crook behavior. what makes people excuse his unethical behavior, because you both talk to the same invisible friend?

  21. He was a true monster. the entire Satmar community give the rest of the Jews a bad name!
They are a bunch of fanatics.

  22. Its easy to dig up dirt in anyone if you look hard enough.
I'm not convinced he's such a bad guy just cause the Post said so. In fact it makes me think he's probably a good guy!
The Post is a rag, and I would be happy to learn IT was found burning in a dumpster on Long Island or any other dumpster for that matter!!

  23. Seems like someone is paying money for a shmear campaign.
this is not news, pure malice gossip.

All of the accusations posted are 'a one size fits all' in the real estate business today. Nothing alarming, seems like one private lender did not want to lose any money. How about all the money lost in the stock market? No one wants to lose. But are we encouraging murder? Where is the new mayor? asleep at the wheel.

there are no reports of drugs or illegal weapons or human trafficking, or any outrageous criminal activity.

Menachem Stark was brutally murdered. Seems like his real estate deals lost borrowed money, nothing unusual in today's business world. Let's say a bullet could have explained that. Abduction, torture, murder was pure anti Semitic. And if you would argue that not, then we just entered a new era, KILL WHOM YOU DISAGREE WITH!

  24. I live in Brooklyn and lived for three years in a horrible slum apartment run by Hasidic Jewish men. I'm curious if this was the same company (I knew them as "Full Time Management") because they never returned our calls ever, and I lived in that apartment w/o heat or hot water for months, and overcharged $3,000 because they did not want to return my security deposit. NYC really should regulate these things better because I called 311 about these issues but the management was never fined and never contacted us. I wouldnt be surprised if this man ran his business in a similar way - I know people in my old building definitely felt violently towards our management company because of the way they ignored their tenants and let the buildings fall apart without doing any repairs.

  26. Number 1 thing to know:
    He is still alive.
    -Body burned to disguise identity.
    -Barely if no autopsy.
-Loans and money missing before death.
-Suspect has little , to no motivation.
    -Accomplices are?
    Plenty of other red flags.
