We were shopping a while back and saw in a store this photo of the Brooklyn Bridge without a bike lane.
The bike / pedestrian lanes were first painted there in the early 70s, according to Wikipedia.
Don't know why there was just one white line painted along the edge.
There used to be flights of steps you had to carry your bike up at two spots along the walkway as well.

I always thought the line was there to warn bicyclists against running into the cables. At the time there was no line to separate peds from cyclists but peds were encouraged to stay on the south side and cyclists on the north.
