About 7,000 fans showed up for the Dylan concert in Prospect Park last night. The line was sooo long it doubled back on itself (till the cops made everybody unwind down a side road). Not too many teens -- average age probably in the 40s, but still a good number in their 20s and 30s. Met one 83-year-old guy who told me Dylan was his main man.It started to lightning and thunder, but then it cleared right up without any rain at all. Good omen.
Though the show was scheduled for about 7 p.m. according to the papers, everyone didn't even get inside the bandshell area till almost 8. We weren't checking the time (it was dark and we had to keep the balloons bouncing) but we think Dylan came on stage about 8:20.
What a beautiful night and what a mellow crowd. Dylan came on wearing a black cowboy suit and flat-brimmed hat and got right into it. Honestly, his voice is shot to pieces, but it got better as the show progressed and there was a lot of love. The band was really first rate.
