Bob Dylan in Brooklyn Aug. 12, 2008: How to Get There and Other Details

Going to Dylan's concert in Prospect Park Tuesday?

Here are some details:

The concert starts at 7:00 p.m., and the gates usually open one hour prior. (Note: tickets say 6:30) What time to get there? All we can say is there are 2,000 reserved seats and 5,000 general admission spaces on the lawn.

Performance is RAIN or SHINE.

The Dylan concert is not an official Celebrate Brooklyn concert, but it will likely have the same rules. For most Celebrate Brooklyn concerts, beer and wine are sold for on-site consumption, and Two Boots Brooklyn is the food concessionaire. (Sandwiches, salads and grilled specialties.) Official rules: "Do not bring cans, bottles, coolers, alcoholic beverages, pets, video cameras, audio recording devices, or professional cameras into the festival site." No lawnchairs.

Location: The Bandshell is located inside Prospect Park in Brooklyn, at Prospect Park West and 9th Street.

By Public Transportation:
F Train to 15th Street/Prospect Park station
2 or 3 Train to Grand Army Plaza (much further away)
Here's a link to the MTA subway map.

B-68, B-69, or B-75 Buses to Prospect Park West & Ninth Street.
Here's a link to the Brooklyn bus map.

By Car:
• From Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges: Take Flatbush Ave. to Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Park West exit to 9th St.
From BQE: Take BQE to 38th St. exit. Make left on 4th Ave, then right on 9th St. to Prospect Park West.

If you don't have tickets, hang out as close as possible. The Bandshell, according to BRIC, has a new "distributed" sound system "which provide excellent sound quality while tightly directing the sound at the audience and away from other areas."

It should be noted that umbrellas are also banned. There are usually piles of dozens and dozens of them by the entrances on rainy nights. Bring a jacket with a hood or some other rain-resistant clothing in case the rumored thunder showers happen by.

Good point -- there's a 20 - 30 percent chance of rain...

Thanks McB for the helpful Dylan info which certainly serves to stoke the excitement...

We have general admission lawn tix... Any idea how the view is from the lawn ?

The website says you can picnic so I guess you can bring a blanket, though no bottles or cans, umbrellas, recording equipment allowed...

Glad to be there to Celebrate Brooklyn, with Bob Dylan and y'all.

You can also be like me: drive in from Long Island in the AM, drive around for nearly an hour looking for a spot to park (tues and fri alternate side of the street rules suck), finally find a spot on 11th and Prospect Park West. Then took the subway so that I can actually work a few hours in Midtown Manhattan.

I was one of the lucky ones to get tickets 15 minutes after pre-sale started and got reserved seating.

This is what I understand we should expect at a Dylan concert:

His back will be to half the audience (I think my seats are in that half)

The old familiars will sound new and unrecognizable. He does this to avoid being a nostalgia act. I'm rather looking forward to this aspect.

A friend who has been to the Bandshell before tells us that all areas of the lawn are good. No need to get there really early because there are good sightlines from everywhere.

thanks for the additional info. I have been confused about the start time. the papers say 7pm, bobdylan.com says 8pm and ticketmaster says doors open at 6:30pm. I will be on the lawn and wanted to get there when doors opened so as to find a spot on the lawn. I take it that water bottles are allowed...

haven't been back to bklyn in over a decade when I saw Mandrill at the the bandshell...

can anyone suggest a good dive bar to pregame within a few F train stops of the park?

or--are there bars nearby?

Is it better to take the F than the Q from Midtown?

I'll be taking the F train from Midtown. It lets you off at 15th and Prospect Park West.

You can also try www.hopstop.com for more complete directions. Has anyone else tried this site? I think it's great!

Don't worry about getting wet. Just don't forget the bug spray. The mosquitoes are nasty in the park especially at dusk. So what if it's unenvironmental. You don't want the West Nile virus. . .
