Hillary Clinton Won Big In Brooklyn, Lost Big In Staten Island

Courtesy Clinton Campaign
Regardless of Hillary Clinton's performance nationally, she won solidly in Brooklyn.

According to NPR, Clinton won 79.7 percent of the Brooklyn vote, versus 17.9 percent for Trump. (Johnson got .9 percent of the vote while Stein won 1.5 percent. )

The ratio was roughly the same in Queens, with Clinton receiving 75.5 percent of the vote and Trump receiving 22.1 percent.

Clinton got even more of the vote in Manhattan (87.2 vs 10 percent) and the Bronx (88.7 vs 9.6 percent).

But the story was different in Staten Island, where Trump got 57.2 percent and Clinton received 40.4 percent of the vote.

In other races, Charles Schumer won re-election to the Senate, according to the Brooklyn Eagle.

The Eagle also tweeted that Nydia Velazquez has been re-elected to Congress.

Last Week to Register for Make Music New York

Make Music New York is a live, free musical celebration on June 21, with over 1,200 concerts on streets, sidewalks, and parks across the five boroughs.

Musicians -- this is the last week to register to be part of this fantabulous event!

Anyone and everyone can participate. Amateurs, part-time professionals, and established artists are all welcome.

If you have an outdoor location where you’d like to host a concert (such as the sidewalk outside of your building), this is also the last week to register. Event organizers will match up venues with musicians.

Musicians can also join a “Mass Appeal” event. MMNY organizes hundreds of musicians to band together to perform massive pieces written for a single type of instrument. Each performance works differently, depending on the genre, the instrument, and the location.

In another offshoot, MMNY will present Sousapalooza, a massive, brassy tribute to the March King in Bryant Park. They’ll be running through all the best-loved marches and fanfares by Philip Sousa and his contemporaries.

Thousands in Brooklyn and Staten Island Lose Power Monday Night

Con Ed's Mobile Command Post. Photo by Con Ed
It was a hot and sticky night for more than 9,000 Con Edison customers in Brooklyn and Staten Island Monday night into Tuesday.

Staten Island was hardest hit, with approximately 19,000 customer outages in the Fresh Kills and Fox Hills neighborhoods losing power.

By 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, the situation had improved on Staten Island, to just over 3,000 customers without power. For roughly 2,600 of them, Con Ed says the power will be restored by 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. The power prognosis for hundreds of other Staten Island customers is "pending."

Roughly 1,000 Con Ed customers were without power Brooklyn as of 1:30 a.m.. Con Ed says the power won't be back on in Brooklyn until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Con Ed has asked affected neighborhoods to conserve energy while company crews work to repair equipment problems.  Con Edison has also reduced voltage in those areas as a precaution.

Early Tuesday morning, about 100 customers in Manhattan and the same number in the Bronx were without power.

Con Ed issued an alert at 9 p.m. Monday night. It said:

Due to the extremely hot temperatures, Con Edison wants to remind all customers citywide to conserve energy. Con Edison is asking customers to limit use of washers, dryers, air conditioners, and other energy-intensive equipment, and to turn off lights and televisions when not needed.

Customers can report outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633).

Recchia Did Not Debate Grimm in Brooklyn Because Debate Moderator Was Grimm Employee

Democratic contender Domenic Recchia did not attend a candidate forum in Brooklyn on Tuesday because the debate moderator works in rival Republican Michael Grimm’s Brooklyn office: Ms. Vella-Marrone is Grimm's Brooklyn Operations Director and a vice chair of the NY State Conservative Party.

Despite this detail, Congressman Michael Grimm said Recchia was a coward for not debating, the Observer reports.

He also said that if re-elected he fully expects to return to the Committee on Financial Services. “In fact, the chairman has already said he’s holding my spot,” Mr. Grimm said. (Grimm had resigned resigned from the committee position in the wake of his 20-count federal indictment.)

Less than three weeks to the election.

Time to Repaint Fading Bike Lanes in Brooklyn

Painting the bike lane on Clinton Street. Photo by MK Metz
Workers repainted the faded green bike lane on Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights late last week. Cyclists had complained that this and other painted bike lanes were becoming almost invisible, and cars were "disrespecting" the lane.

Vehicles driving in the bike lanes no doubt hasten the fading, but salt and snow plows also take their toll.

Scott Shaffer of streets.mn has an excellent post about faded bike lanes. It reads in part:

"A bike lane isn’t just a physical thing — it’s a social construct. Like money, it only matters because we all act like it does . . . The fading of the paint, and the cause of the fading, erodes this foundation. It erases confidence in the bike lane, not just the paint."

VIDEO: NYPD Saves a Man Threatening to Jump Off the Verrazano Bridge Monday

From InsideNYPD:

"At roughly 10 a.m. Monday morning, police responded to a 911 call of a suicidal male along the Verrazano Bridge. The man, who had driven a Dodge Caravan Brooklyn bound along the upper level of the bridge, left the vehicle with the hazards lights on and climbed out onto the outer cables.

Detective Jeffrey Loughery, Detective Paul Fazio and Police Officer Robert Reed of Emergency Service Squad 5 arrived and suited up in their safety harnesses.

Officer Reed began speaking to the individual, who was upset that he could not find a job and provide for his family. Officer Reed then moved out to him until the men were approximately five feet apart. The individual was standing on a ledge with both hands gripped around the cables and turned his body while wrapping his other arm around the cables.

Detectives Loughery and Fazio, believing the man was preparing to jump, quickly moved in and secured him with a safety harness and a rescue line. He was then brought to the safety of the roadbed and removed by EMS to Staten Island University North Hospital."
