Vote for NY Aquarium's New Murals

Mural by Thomas Manco

Now you can vote for the three murals which New York Aquarium will display along the Coney Island Boardwalk.

Judges narrowed down 42 artist submissions to seven finalists.

"We received incredible submissions from artists all around the New York area who want to help transform our Education Hall boardwalk facade and inspire people to protect our waters. Now we need New Yorkers to help to choose the winner,” Jon Forrest Dohlin, director of the New York Aquarium, said.

The three winning designs will be installed and unveiled the week of World Ocean’s Day, June 8.

More on this here, including some very corny puns.

Last Chance to Catch Coney Island Mermaids Exhibit

The successful exibition "Coney Island Mermaids, 1996-2016," representing over 20 years of work by photographer Luke Ratray, will close this coming Friday, July 22nd at an event running from 7-10pm.

The event will take place at the Urban Folk Art Gallery (101 Smith St., Brooklyn, 11201).

Luke Ratray has captured a unique perspective on the annual Mermaid Parade by "focusing on the people instead of the pageantry," according to a release.

"People who invent identities for themselves, even if only for a day, have always fascinated me," Ratray said in the release. "When I photographed the Mermaid Parade for the first time, I knew that I found something special. I was attracted to the homemade spirit and revelry of people involving themselves in what may be the last self-made, and largely self-regulated, public performance in New York City. "

In the early photos, sightings of the first "property for lease" and "for sale" signs appear. There are glimpses of the Surf Hotel, The Bank Building, Denny's ice cream shop, Nick's diner, and the old-school "Shoot 'Em Up" on Surf Avenue. (They have all since been razed.)

May 4: City Council Hearing on Landmarking the Coney Island Boardwalk

From the Coney Island History Project:

On May 4th, the City Council's Land Use Committee will be hearing testimony on Councilman Mark Treyger's resolution calling for Coney Island's Riegelmann Boardwalk to be designated an official scenic landmark.

"The landmarking process in this city needs to be an equitable process, because the history and tradition of all of our city's neighborhoods must be preserved," says Councilman Treyger. "Too much has been lost already. The Boardwalk is a quintessential part of Southern Brooklyn's history, and I am encouraging all residents of Southern Brooklyn, as well as any New Yorker that remembers walking down the Boardwalk, feeling the cool ocean breeze embracing them, to join me on May 4th at City Hall. Let your voice be heard! Testify at this hearing and make sure the city administration and the Landmarks Preservation Commission know how much the Boardwalk means to you and to our city."

In February, Treyger introduced the resolution to the City Council where it received the support of all but one of the City's Council Members, as well as Public Advocate Letitia James. The resolution will be discussed at the Committee's May 4th 11:00 AM hearing in the Council Committee Room at City Hall.

Brooklyn: Harris First African-American to Represent Majority White District; Persaud in Canarsie

Democrat Pam Harris enjoyed a "bigger than expected victory" in the race to succeed former Assemblymember Alec Brook-Krasny, the Brooklyn Eagle reports.

It had been expected to be a close race. But instead, Harris easily defeated Republican Lucretia Regina-Potter, 63 percent to 37 percent.

The 46th AD includes parts of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Coney Island.

Harris is the only African-American to represent a majority white district in New York City, the Observer says.

In another Brooklyn race, Democratic Assemblymember Roxanne Persaud won a landslide victory in the special election in the 19th state Senate District (Canarsie-Crown Heights-East Flatbush).

Persaud will take the seat formerly held by Democrat John Sampson, convicted.

Coney Island Boardwalk Advocates Pissed that Brooklyn's Dumped History Ended Up Restored in Italy

The Coney Island boardwalk, now in Italy. Courtesy BRIC via Sheepshead Bites
A video produced by BRIC TV looks into how discarded wood planks from the Coney Island Boardwalk, supposedly destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, ended up as a "beautifully restored indoor walkway at this year’s World’s Fair in Milan, Italy," reports Sheepshead Bites.

The revelation angered many boardwalk advocates who felt the boardwalk had been prematurely discarded by city officials, who are working to replace much of it with concrete and recycled materials...
