HuffPost Mini-Documentary Shines Light on Wrongful Conviction Cases in Brooklyn

There are currently more than 100 wrongful conviction cases under review in Brooklyn. In HuffPost Originals mini-documentary, "Stolen Time," Alyona Minkovski talked to three men whose lives were upended by wrongful convictions.

Sundhe Moses, Kevin Smith and Derrick Hamilton all spent years in prison after being convicted of heinous crimes. However, despite all the facts pointing to a wrongful conviction, formal exoneration for these victims is a long and arduous process.

Retired Detective Louis Scarcella is connected to 72 of the cases that are being reviewed by the Brooklyn DA, including those of Sundhe, Kevin and Derrick.

Witness coercion, false confessions and violence are just some of the allegations brought up when discussing the detective and according to Hamilton it's time for Scarcella to pay the price. "He deserves to go to jail. He deserves to see what he did to so many other people. What it feels like to be isolated from your family."

'Funny Business: Writing for Late Night' TV Panel in Brooklyn

Writers from The Daily Show, The Nightly Show and Late Night with David Letterman will gather in Brooklyn Heights at St. Francis College – Founders Hall on April 26 at 7:30 p.m. to pass on their wit and wisdom.

In an election year, we're reminded how much we look to comedy and late-night television to provide perspective and give voice to frustrations and absurdities of the political process. Three of the people who put those jokes on TV are coming to St. Francis College.

The event features Zhubin Parang (The Daily Show with Trevor Noah), Franchesca Ramsey (The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore) and Joe Toplyn (Comedy Writer / Producer).

FREE for All Students and Faculty (from any institution) – $10 for all others

The writers will discuss their impact on politics and the national conversation in this election year as well as their process of thoroughly researching and fact-checking each segment.

The event is presented with the NYC Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment and St. Francis College. Organized by the Center for Communication.

Gowanus-Based Software 'Genius' Stirs Up Controversy

An annotated article as it appeared in News Genius.
An online tool from the Gowanus-based Genius and a new chief for its News Genius product, ex-Gawker editor Leah Finnegan, have people asking whether strangers should be allowed to annotate online articles.

As Technical.ly Brooklyn reports, the tool is Genius’s Web Annotator, which allows Genius users to highlight sections of articles published in the Internet and offer "context/opinions/reactions/whatever" right in the text.

News Genius editors highlight sections of text they have something to say about and leave comments.

This doesn't sit right with some authors, especially those who write small, private-ish blogs -- like  Ella Dawson,  who writes about living with herpes.

"Seeing your thoughts over my words feels like a violation," she wrote to News Genius.
