Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival comes to Albee Square, Crown Heights, Brooklyn Bridge Park

The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival is throwing a party this week that includes a film festival, the Juice Hip Hop Exposition, a free block party, talks and, on July 15, the grand finale concert.

The Hip-Hop Institute takes place on July 12, 10am-7pm, at Medgar Evers College. The theme of the day/conference is “Speak The Truth." Discuss issues of empowerment, social justice, health & wellness, as well as entrepreneurship. The programming consists of lectures, panels, and various workshops.

On Thursday, July 13th*, stop by Albee Square for the Spread Love Block Party from 4-9pm. Dance as DJ Spinna and DJ Uncle Ralph McDaniels spin on the 1s and 2s; hang in the beer garden, and stick around for some giveaways from the festival.

The big highlight comes on July 15, with the grand finale concert in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Dunkirk in 70mm Coming to Brooklyn

Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn will be installing a new 70mm projector in their largest theater, with Christopher Nolan’s DUNKIRK as the inaugural film to be presented in 70mm on July 20th. The Alamo Brooklyn is one of just six New York City theaters presenting DUNKIRK in 70mm, and the only Brooklyn theater to show in the format.

DUNKIRK tells the true story of “The Miracle of Dunkirk” and the unparalleled heroism and selflessness that saved the lives of 330,000 Allied soldiers. Following the earliest disastrous British invasion of Europe, hundreds of thousands of Allied forces and members of high command found themselves trapped, surrounded by German forces and with the sea to their backs.

Enter the “Little Ships of Dunkirk,” a flotilla of 800 privately owned ferries, fireboats and fishing boats, which helped pluck the soldiers from the beaches and evacuate them safely across the Channel to Dunkirk.

DUNKIRK opens theatrically on July 20th. Tickets for DUNKIRK in 70mm are on sale now and can be purchased via the Alamo Drafthouse website .

New Public Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn at 300 Ashland to Be Unveiled Wednesday

A new public plaza at Two Trees' 300 Ashland will be unveiled on Wednesday, June 28th.

The celebration includes music by JahPan and special guests, food by Habana Outpost, and more on this 15,000 square foot landscaped plaza at the corner of Fulton and Lafayette.

The terraced plaza was designed by Enrique Norten of Ten Arquitectos and Grain Collective, and will be programmed by the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership.

Brooklyn Law School Rallies Against Muslim Immigration Ban

Brooklyn Law School held a "Brooklyn Stands Together" march and rally Thursday night at Brooklyn Borough Hall.

Students at the law school have been involved in protests at JFK, in Battery Park, in front of the federal courthouse in Downtown Brooklyn and other locations over President Trump's Muslim immigration ban. 

Several professors are working as volunteer lawyers for people detained and several students have become legal observers for the National Lawyers Guild, according to the Brooklyn Eagle.

De Blasio to Sign Lactation Room Requirement Into Law at Brooklyn Borough Hall

Borough President Eric Adams will join Mayor Bill de Blasio today to sign a bill that will require municipal agencies offering services to the public to provide lactation rooms where new mothers will have the ability to breastfeed unmolested.

The legislation was introduced at BP Adams’ request in the New York City Council.

The ceremony will take place in Brooklyn Borough Hall, where Adams established the building’s Lactation Lounge that opened last Mother’s Day.

Fire & Disaster Drill in Downtown Brooklyn Monday (Aug. 1)

There's a perfectly reasonable explanation for those fires and scattered bodies you'll be seeing next to Cadman Plaza Park in Brooklyn starting 6:30 p.m. Monday: They're part of a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class (and the bodies are actually practice dummies).

The disaster drill will take place at Cadman Plaza East and Red Cross Place. FDNY and NYPD personnel will be action.

CERT members will practice aiding the injured, controlling traffic, calming the panicky, and putting out fires.

According to OEM, CERT members undergo "an intensive 10-week training program that raises awareness about emergencies and disasters and provides basic response skills needed for fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, and traffic control."

BQE Closure Will Reroute Traffic in Brooklyn Heights, Downtown Brooklyn This Sunday

 The Brooklyn Heights Association warns that the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) will fully close the BQE between Atlantic Avenue and Tillary Street (from Exit 27 to Exit 29) on Sunday, July 31st.

Vehicles on the BQE will be rerouted with the help of traffic agents and electronic signs onto Atlantic Avenue, Court Street, Cadman Plaza West and Tillary Street. If possible, please avoid driving in these areas during those times, BHA asks.

The closure is meant to help reduce the noise and vibration caused by the BQE's deteriorated roadway.

Brooklyn Poetry Slam Tonight

An intergenerational poetry slam and open mic is taking place at 7 p.m. tonight at BRIC House in Downtown Brooklyn.

The slam features Brooklyn-based poets who respond to city culture, national issues, and the exhibitions on-view at BRIC House. Hosted by Mahogany L. Browne, with music by DJ Jive Poetic.
