We got a peek into the cathedral-like interior of the historic Independence Bank building, where Trader Joe's is still setting up.
We're happy to report that there are no dropped ceilings, at least yet. While the outside of the old bank building is landmarked, the interior is basically up for grabs.
But what in the world is that cement wall, just below center right? That wasn't there before.

The cinderblock wall shown in the photograph is probably a housing for some sort of dumbwaiter/lift that will bring goods upstairs from the basement.Or it could be an elevator ala Whole Foods in the Bowery.
It's beautiful subway tile on that wall Drama Queens, not cement or cinderblocks. I'm sure it will be lovely. If they are already putting in coolers and fixtures, I would say that they wont be ruining the integrity of the interior. Go outside. Enjoy the fantastic weather. I'm sure that you'll get word of the store opening.
I work there, and yep, it's actually hiding a giant freight elevator. That wall is actually a lot larger than in the photo.
