This is the result of this evening's fire at Gristedes Supermarket on Henry Street near Pineapple Walk in Brooklyn Heights.
Black smoke billowed north up Henry Street during the fire. Stores on Pineapple Walk closed early, and the smell still lingers inside buildings all the way to the end of Henry Street.
A worker told McBrooklyn that the fire started in the unit that keeps the bread and donuts warm, just past the deli. Store workers told the Brooklyn Heights Blog that the blaze was caused "by an electrical malfunction in the deli department."
A police officer told McBrooklyn "what the fire didn't get, the water from the Fire Department did." He also said that the basement was totally flooded.
Here, officials inspect the damage.
The condition of the ceilings seems to indicate that the Fire Department tore them down as they put out the fire.
UPDATE here.

Brooklyn Heights Gristedes Fire Dismal Aftermath

Hmmm....besides the food past the expired date (which this place was famous for), this fire stinks. This store has been primed for an upgrade for ten years. If I was an inspector I'd check the leases on all equipment--and definitely the lease with the building. The building just went from Mitchell-Lama to Condo and probably want some higher return anyway.
Glad nobody was hurt and hopefully employees will still be paid.
Besides hoping that nobody was trapped in there, all I could think was at least the salmon will now be smoked, and those rotisserie chickens wont be pink inside anymore. Just saying.
what about the meds! what about the meds! where we going go?
at last, a decent fire sale!
Maybe the 'customer suggestion box" got to hot to handle?
On the positive, they finally expanded on the b b q section.
I just heard that there were some customers there late last night in the pharmacy section and when no cashier could be found they left an iou, as apparently they really needed their meds.
thats right, gristedes got completely cleaned out sometime after sundown to sunrise...

2:31 if tru guess those college kids across the street cant be that dumb and know a shoppingdeal when it stares you in the mug
The building has always been and still is a Mitchell-Lama
I thought that fire was super suspicious also. Now the store is back in biz with windows added to the building to help relieve the dismal feel, cleaner, fancier product displays and a new surveillance system but still the same crappy attitude from the lazy cashiers. Management is always top down so, although I haven't interacted directly with the manager, I can imagine. I only shop there when Key Foods is closed!
