Scenes from Saturday's 2013 Willowtown Spring Fair, Brooklyn Heights

Neighborhood and family fun was the theme at the 2013 Willowtown Spring Fair in Brooklyn Heights on Saturday. Kids hopped and jumped in the potato sack and three-legged races, and grownups showed their muscle in the tug-o-war competition. There were jumpy castles and face painting, and a self-guided architectural tour, too.

Mona’s Hot Four had the street hopping with old-fashioned jazz. (Musicians: Dennis Lichtman, clarinet;Jared Engel, bass; Nick Russo, banjo; and Gordon Webster.)

Iris Cafe and Waterfront Wine and Spirits provided food and drinks, and the Willowtown Community Garden sold plants and filled a snack table with vegetables. One of the raffle prizes was an East River boating adventure by the Village Community Boathouse, illustrated by the above boat docked in the middle of Willow Street.

The annual fair raises money for the Willowtown Association. Tree planting is one of the projects supported by the fair.

Relaxing Saturday at the Willowtown Fair, Brooklyn Heights

A giant Batman jumpy-castle, a self-guided architecture tour, kids games and face-painting, music and tables full of goodies were just some of the activities at Saturday's Willowtown Fair.

Iris Café and Yogo Yogurt provided lunch and snacks, and a plant sale was held by the local garden.

Willowtown is a shady little sub-neighborhood in Brooklyn Heights, running between the west ends of Joralemon Street and Atlantic Avenue, from Hicks to Furman Street.

The annual fair raises money for the Willowtown Association. Tree planting is one of the projects supported by the fair.

New trees have been planted on Columbia Place and along the Palmetto Playground on State Street.

Two of the trees were dedicated in memory of Willowtown residents Caroline Palestino and Mary Merz, who died last year.

The Brooklyn Heights Blog has posted a video of a kids sack race at the fair.

Riverside Apartments, Brooklyn Heights, Gets New Tenant?

After years of going empty, it looks like the old Riverside Deli on the ground floor of the Brooklyn Heights' historic Riverside Apartments at Columbia Place and Joralemon Street is getting ready for a new tenant.

Workers have been giving the site a redo for the last week or more. One worker told McBrooklyn that he thought a new deli would be going in.

In April, McBrooklyn reported that many of the retail sites on the ground floor of the complex had been put up for rent. It's long been a mystery as to why the controversial owner of the apartments (the Pinnacle Group) cleared out the retail tenants on the ground floor and left the spaces empty for years.

Last month, a tree in the Riverside Apartments' courtyard "with a trunk so large it couldn’t be embraced by tree-huggers” was dedicated to the memory of Brooklyn humanitarian Alfred Tredway White (1846-1921) at the Willowtown Association’s annual fair.

The tree and several other towering elms and sycamores are to be uprooted if a proposed parking garage is constructed in the courtyard, according to the Brooklyn Eagle.

Columbia Place Plant: Somebody Pot Me, Please

It's a rose bush on the corner of Joralemon Street and Columbia Place in Brooklyn Heights, and it's crying out to be re-potted.

A few years back, the Columbia Place Association transformed this short street -- running from Joralemon to State Streets -- into a lush, whimsical landscape. Plants were not only growing from barrels, they were sprouting from chairs hanging on posts, from tall boots, funny buckets, etc. In 1999 the street took 3rd place in the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest for "Most Creative Planters," and for several years thereafter the block was fabulously green

Adding to the allure of the Columbia Place was Alicia's Cafe, a flower shop and a general store, all on the ground floor of Alfred T. White's historic Riverside Houses.

The restaurant, flower shop and general store were mysteriously emptied by the owner, the controversial Pinnacle Group and partner Praedium, a couple of years ago. The planters are disintegrating.

(Incidentally, in May, the Landmarks Preservation Commission nixed Pinnacle's plans to uproot century-old trees and build a two-level garage in the courtyard of the Riverside House.)

The rose bush is in front of the closed general store on the corner, if anybody wants to give it a new barrel.
