A Shady Place to Eat in DUMBO

You can pretty much count on finding McBrooklyn munching down on Asia Dogs, Brooklyn Oyster Party po' boys and other goodies at Flea Food Under the Archway in DUMBO on Thursdays. Even on stinkin' hot days it's fairly cool and relaxed.

We can thank Dumbo Improvement District and Brooklyn Flea for cooking this one up.

The goodies are served on Thursdays 11:30am-8pm and Fridays 11:30am-4pm, through August at the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge. See the whole restaurant lineup here.

Why Are Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges Farther Apart in Manhattan?

Recently a young person asked us: "Why are the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges so close together in Brooklyn but so far apart in Manhattan?"

Looking at the overhead view of the two bridges using Google Maps, we were struck by the 'V' shape they form, with the wide part of the V in Manhattan. We're sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation. Anyone?

Fireworks Over Manhattan Bridge Sunday, Oct 4

Not one but two sets of fireworks celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Manhattan Bridge Sunday evening.

A fireworks display by Grucci of NY went off at about 7:30 p.m. (presented by Gristedes.) There was great viewing from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Then another set of fireworks lit the sky north of the bridge sometime after 8 p.m. (This was a surprise to us!) Check out gio.o's photo on flickr.

Other 100th events included a parade of historic vehicles, walking and bike tours, and public discussions on the history and construction of the bridge More events -- tours, discussions, etc. -- will celebrate this milestone all week. See the Brooklyn Eagle for the full schedule.

Shooting DUMBO

Lots of people like to shoot photos of this slice of the Manhattan Bridge, seen from Washington Street in DUMBO.

On our recent walk along the street, not only were these three folks shooting the bridge, but four or five others were taking the same photo at the same time.
