Last Minute Super Bowl 2013 Bars in Brooklyn

CBS
It's Super Bowl Sunday in Brooklyn (OK, technically they're playing in New Orleans) and all of a sudden you have an overwhelming urge to watch the San Francisco 49ers face off against the Baltimore Ravens.

Did you forget to make plans? It's not too late: Here are a few a last minute places in Brooklyn to eat, drink and catch that Super Bowl Fever XLVII (What time does the Super Bowl start? 6:30 p.m.):

- In Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl will be showing Super Bowl XLVII on all of their big screens with full game audio.  Brooklyn Winery is blasting the game on a 116" screen and surround sound. Many more Williamsburg venues are listed on Brokelyn (also checkout the action at the Warsaw in Greenpoint, with a cinema-size main screen and four projectors.)

- In Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens, hit the Brazen Head on Atlantic; Buschenschank at 320 Court. It's all-you-can-eat at Angry Wades on Smith Street (technically in Boerum Hill). More Super Bowl venues, including in Red Hook, listed at Carroll Gardens Patch.

- In Gowanus, the Bell House will be showing the action on their big screen and serving sandwiches from Urban Rustic (their website is down but more details here).

- Are you in Ditmas Park? Ditmas Park Patch has a list of several neighborhood joints perfect for bowl-watching.

- Brooklyn Magazine has gathered an eclectic list of Super Bowl party spots from Red Hook to Fort Greene, including Woodwork in Prospect Heights.

- Want to watch the Super Bowl really cheap (or even free?)? Serious Eats has put together a list of the cheapest venues -- with $5 drafts, $3 shots, free halftime wings and pizza. Outstanding pick: The Waterstone Grill in DUMBO at 79 Pearl Street: Five televisions, and all-you-can eat wings, barbecue pork sliders, Stella draft, and bottles of Bud for $25.

- We haven't tried it yet, but in Brooklyn Heights, the Park Plaza Diner (220 Cadman Plaza West at Pineapple Walk) is advertising a Super Bowl shindig at the newly-renovated sports bar.

- Are you looking for gay-friendly bars with Super Bowl parties? It's amazing how many there are in Brooklyn! See Yelp for details.

- Are you working, on the go, or just don't have time to run out to a bar? You can enjoy the game virtually anyway -- watch the Super Bowl 2013 live stream on CBS for free.

Giant Flashing Video Billboard for Barclays Center Parked in Brooklyn Bridge Park

How nice! A giant, flashing video billboard for Barclays Center has been installed in Brooklyn Bridge Park!

Such a great use of a waterfront park! Because we all looove Barclays. And we looove American Express which will allow us to go to Barclays!

If you go around the back the giant, flashing video billboard you can make a "dance" or "rock out video" and get a chance to win tickets from American Express to Barclays! Which we looove.

Helloooo Brooklyn!

Now Kids Can Prepare for Their Future at McDonalds

So we took a stroll inside the Toys "R" Us pop-up store on Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn the other day, just because it's been a long time since we've been in a Toys "R" Us.

Wow, that store is just sad. They never painted the dingy walls after Sids Hardware moved out. The toys seem a bit worse than you would expect, even in a Toys "R" Us pop-up -- Hannah Montana branded plastic stuff, the least-glamorous Barbies  we've ever seen. (The Nerf guns were good, however. Nerf guns are always good.)

Above: McDonalds fast food counter toys -- now your kids can put on the McDonalds hat and practice slinging burgers and fries like a real McDonalds worker! If you buy both sets your child can set up a McDonald's grill, fryer and soda machine at home -- plus a golden arches counter and a drive-thru intercom. And yes, the cash register "really rings."

What a wonderful way to prepare your child for his or her future career!

Final Music Concert at First Presbyterian Marks End of Summer

Jami Jackson pulled off a great performance at Thursday evening's final Summer Music Concert at First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn Heights. It was a great way to end to the church's lovely outdoor evening series.

Goodbye summer . . .

Tribes of New York, Each With Its Own Map

We’re not eight million people sharing a single metropolis—we’re seperate tribes, each living in our own private Idaho, says New York Magazine, which has mapped out the city for ten different urban archaeotypes: the Design Maven, the Cheapskate, the Hedonist, the "It" Girl, etc.

Cheapskates live in a universe of "$2-a-pound clothing, $2.25 dinners, and almost-free dental work," while hedonists see the city as a "constellation of pleasures: custom-made sheets from Bergdorf’s, truffle dinners at Del Posto."

Our favorite map -- Rebel Youth -- is Brooklyncentric, of course; hotspots include serious clubs and gritty bars, alternative shows and parties, and anti-Establishment art centers.
