Meetings to Discuss L Train Repairs to Be Held in May, Starting in Brooklyn

The MTA and elected officials have announced the first of two public meetings to discuss future work on the Canarsie Tunnel, which carries the L subway train under the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The first meeting will be held on Thursday, May 5 at 6 p.m. at the Marcy Avenue Armory at 355 Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn. A Manhattan-based public meeting to be held later in May will be announced soon, according to the MTA.

Chairman Thomas F. Prendergast said the public meetings will mark the official start of a "robust community engagement effort in which we will detail the need for the project, solicit feedback from the public on the potential construction options and begin a collaborative process to develop an alternative service plan to mitigate impacts on L Subway train riders.”

Any 24/7 closure of the Canarsie Tunnel’s two tubes is unlikely to begin before January of 2019, the MTA said.

The public meetings will include a discussion of the potential construction approaches currently under consideration. They will also include an open house at which community members can discuss their concerns with MTA staff; a presentation from MTA and NYC Transit leadership and technical staff; and a question and answer period.

Half Price MetroCards for NYC's Poor?

At a rally on Sunday, Community Service Society and Riders Alliance announced “Fair Fares,” a campaign for reduced-fare MetroCards for the city’s working poor.
In the Transit for All program, an estimated 800,000 riders would be eligible for a half-price fare for lowest-income residents, saving those who opt to participate up to $700 per year.

A reports issued by the groups found that over a quarter of low-income New Yorkers were often unable to afford the subway or bus in the past year.

Farebeating arrests are now the highest number of arrests by the NYPD -- over 29,000 in 2015, 92 percent involving people of color, according to Robert Gangi, Director of the Police Reform Organizing Project.

Gangi says that most people jump the turnstile not for the thrill of it, but because the $5.50 cost of a round trip is a financial burden.

Other large cities, including Seattle, San Francisco, and London, have fare discount programs.

Below is a graphic from their newly-launched publicity campaign.

A number of officials have signed on, including Public Advocate Letitia James, Comptroller Scott Stringer as well as groups such as the Brooklyn Defender Services, the Brooklyn Movement Center, Fifth Avenue Committee, and more.

DUMBO's Snow-Clogged Streets Rated "Secondary" by NYC

PlowNYC Designation Map
Did you wonder why there was so much yucky gray snow on the streets of DUMBO long after other Brooklyn streets were plowed? Here's the answer: The PlowNYC snow removal designation map shows that NYC rates just about all of DUMBO's streets "secondary." (They are in blue; primary streets are shown in red.)

That means DUMBO gets plowed only after the primary streets are plowed.

So there, all you co-working, startup incubator venture-fund hustlers! Seeecoondaaary.

Ice Floes Disrupt NYC/ Brooklyn Ferry Service

A tug boat pushes a large vessel through ice floes on the East River. Photo by MK Metz
Ice floes in the East River are disrupting NYC's ferry service. The East River Ferry said Monday evening that they "are currently operating with a larger vessel for the safety of passengers, which does not allow us to keep our posted schedule. We are also experiencing sporadic terminal closures due to unpredictable ice flow. We expect this to continue for the balance of the day."

Due to the ice, the only accessible ferry locations on Monday were Pier 11, Greenpoint, Long Island City, and E. 34th St.

Before trying to catch the ferry on Tuesday, check out the East River Ferry website.

According to the Old Salt Blog, the East River froze at least a dozen times between 1780 and 1888.

For more photos of the frozen East River, see Gothamist's "Freezepocalypse" compilation.

This American Sign Language message from the NYC Depts of Transportation and Sanitation -- telling us that Alternate Side Parking Regulations will be suspended Monday (February 9th) to deal with snow -- has such a nice, friendly feel to it.

Forecasters urge New Yorkers to take mass transit on Monday, if possible, because the streets will be icy and slippery.

Uber Says It Will Only Hike Prices 280 Percent in NYC During Blizzard of 2015

At a press conference on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio warned unnamed for-hire car services that price-gouging during emergencies was illegal.

"If you have any evidence of people taking advantage of this emergency to unfairly and illegally raise the prices of their rides, call 311 and report it," de Blasio said. "The Taxi and Limousine Commission will investigate.”

Uber told AP that "surge pricing will be capped at 2.8 times the normal fare" during the storm. That's not even triple, which is what Louie the Lip charges during emergencies.

Uber is waay better than Louie the Lip!

All roads and subways are closing at 11 p.m. Monday so get on home.

Sky Gondolas to Connect Brooklyn Neighborhoods to Manhattan?

Roosevelt Island Tramway foggy
Remember when ex-Mayor Michael Bloomberg was considering running aerial gondolas from Brooklyn to Governors Island?

The idea is back, this time with overhead gondolas running from the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Williamsburg, and then from Williamsburg to the Lower East Side.

According to Crain's, the gondolas would eventually branch out to connect Dumbo to the South Street Seaport, and Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and Long Island City, Queens, to Roosevelt Island. (There, the network would meet up with the existing gondola route between Roosevelt Island and Manhattan.)

The idea was proposed Tuesday at the Massey Knakal Brooklyn Real Estate Summi.

This Is Why Henry Street in Cobble Hill Is Closed

Henry St. at Pacific St. Photo: MK Metz, McBrooklyn
A water line replacement job continues to keep cars off Henry Street  in Cobble Hill, from Atlantic Avenue to Kane Street.

According to the Cobble Hill Association, in order to safely replace it the water line, Natural Grid had to relocate an adjacent gas main currently too close to the water line for Department of Design and Construction to do the replacement work. This leads to concerns about the area's historic bluestone sidewalks, which National Grid is supposed to replace (but won't necessarily).

According to the Department of Design and Construction, the project will "install distribution water main extensions for new buildings" and "replace existing extensions, valves and hydrants."

According to DOD. the project is supposed to wrap up by March 24.
