Big Deal in Dumbo This Weekend

Brooklyn Designs kicks off NY Design Week in Dumbo this weekend, and is drawing crowds of design-lovers to the nabe between the bridges. Hot (Brooklyn) designers and trend commentators are holding workshops, serving lunches and throwing parties, and restaurants and galleries are getting in on the action.

The chocolates are flying out the door down the street at Jacques Torres, where the line, at times, literally snakes out onto the sidewalk.

The slow-cooked whole hogs and chicken sold out at Saturday's Brooklyn Pigfest at the Tobacco Warehouse. Beer was provided by Brooklyn Brewery; music was provided by the Cobble Hillbillies.

Those who didn't want to shell out $75 for the Pigfest Sadurday stood in line for Grimaldi's Pizza. Passersby stopped and gawked at the queue -- "This is for pizza? Is it that good?" one asked.

And the truly magical carousel, restored by Jane Walentas (wife of Mr. Dumbo David Walentas) over a period of 22 years, is up and running in it's protected loft. Admirers are signing the petition to relocate it in Brooklyn Bridge Park, where children will actually be able to ride it. (See NY1's story, via DumboNYC, via NYMag.)
