Halloween 2007 on Garden Place in Brooklyn Heights

Garden Place in Brooklyn Heights is Ground Zero for trick or treaters. Thousands of young and old witches, vampires, grim reapers, beasts and fairies (along with the occasional giant iPhone) converge on the street from miles around, to fill their bags and to see the scene. It looks more like Diagon Alley than a street in Brooklyn.

A police car blocks the street off at the north end so all is well.

Nearly all of the Garden Place residents sit out on their spider web-encrusted stoops distributing huge buckets of candy. This is often followed by a quiet after-party inside, away from the invaders. There's a great community feeling, and you always end up seeing many people you know.
