Calabar Imports Opens in DUMBO

Calabar Imports, which imports handcrafted gifts and home accessories from Africa, Asia, Central and South America, has opened a shop in DUMBO at  The Shops, 145 Front Street.

Three months ago Calabar was displaced by the Washington Avenue fire that affected at least 15 families and two businesses in Prospect Heights.

The new store opened on September 1, just in time for Fashion's Night Out and the DUMBO Arts Festival. Co-owner Atim Annette Oton said in a release, "We took some our time to assess and analyze our damages and options before making a decision to open a new location in a new neighborhood."

The Prospect Heights store is scheduled to re-open in January 2012, after the renovation of 820 Washington Avenue is completed and re-stocking of the store is completed. (Calabar Imports in DUMBO will remain open even after it re-opens at 820 Washington Avenue.)

The first event at the store will be an exhibition called Phoenix Rising, curated by Atim Annette Oton.
