Those awesome fireworks going off at 7:30 p.m. over lower Manhattan celebrated the 27th annual Deepavali (AKA Diwali) Festival, taking place at South St. Seaport.

The celebration is sponsored by the Association of Indians in America, the oldest national association of Asian Indians in America.

Diwali, known as the "festival of lights", is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn. According to Wikipedia, the festival signifies "the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair."

The celebration include millions of lights shining on housetops, outside doors and windows, around temples and other buildings.

It would be nice to get a heads up on fireworks that take placed in the lower bay. I always seem to hear about them after they take place.

That's certainly a reasonable request. We'll try to get notice up before they happen when we can.
