Yesterday we traveled through the south mezzanine of the recently-renovated Jay Street / MetroTech subway station. (It used to be called Jay Street / Borough Hall station). We were pleasantly surprised by this colorful animal-themed mural called "Arrivals and Departures."
According to NYCsubway.org, "It is a glass mosaic installation based on paintings by the artist Ben Snead. The various animal species depicted include: starlings, sparrows, lion fish, parrots, tiger beetles, and koi fish."
The MTA Arts for Transit program commissioned the installation while overseeing the restoration of the station.
Did you ever wonder about the artwork installed in a subway station? Here's an art guide for all of the city's stations.
