Where Have We Seen the Brooklyn Tech Triangle Plan Before?

Brooklyn’s newly unveiled $3 billion “Tech Triangle” development project includes a Special Innovation District for new tech businesses, new bus, ferry and bike lanes, a network of green, parklike spaces, a topiary arbor, a Cadman Plaza cafe, a curved footbridge leading to Borough Hall, a seasonal pop-up fantasy land of mini-golf, performance stages, lounges and wading pools, and a massive helium observation balloon overlooking it all.

Cadman Plaza Cafe behind the War Memorial
“This is really a comprehensive plan to guide the area’s growth over the next decade,” said Tucker Reed, president of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, one leg of the Triangle, which also includes DUMBO and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The plans are so fantastical we got the feeling that we'd seen them before . . . including that balloon... especially that balloon.

Then it hit us. The prototype for Tech Triangle ... is The Village, depicted in the 60s cult classic The Prisoner.

In The Prisoner a British secret agent is gassed and wakes up in an isolated, idyllic fantasy village, where everything necessary to happiness is provided.. There, he's given a number (six) instead of a name.

Everyone rides "penny-farthing" bicycles, plays games and is supposed to be happy. But no one can escape.

If they try, Rover, a weird white balloon thing, will suffocate them.

We're just joking, of course. Ha ha ha, we'll be able to escape, right?

Right?

Full plan at Brooklyn Tech Triangle.
More stories about the Brooklyn Tech Triangle at DumboNYC and the NY Post.

Health Care Jobs Employ More Brooklynites Than Any Other Field

It's not construction, information or real estate -- it's the healthcare and social assistance fields (shown in green in the chart below) that provide the most employment in Brooklyn, followed by retail (shown in black).

Figures released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis show that in 2009, there were 183,009 healthcare and social assistance jobs in Brooklyn; in 2010 it was up to 191,838; by 2011, there were 198,152.

Not all possible fields are shown on this chart -- the software limited us to 10 at a time, so we picked those with the most workers and those with the most relevance to Brooklyn, including real estate and information.

Note: If SUNY succeeds in closing down Long Island College Hospital, there will likely be 2,000 fewer health care jobs in Brooklyn in 2013.

Let 'Em Laugh: Brooklyn's Food Scene Is Bringing In the Bucks

Smorgasburg in DUMBO. Photo: MK Metz
Haters love to scoff at Brooklyn's trendy food scene, but apparently Brooklyn is laughing, too -- all the way to the bank.

The Brooklyn Eagle reports that Brooklyn's burgeoning food sector is an engine of job growth for the borough, based on a study done for the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce.

Brooklyn’s “food chain” -- supermarkets, restaurants, gourmet food shops and food makers— accounts for 16 percent of businesses in Brooklyn and 12.5 percent of Brooklyn’s private sector jobs.

Restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and grocery stores added one out of every five new jobs in Brooklyn since 2000. In 2011 alone, wages in the Brooklyn food sector came to $1.46 billion.

While not all food-related jobs rack in big bucks, many do -- and start-ups and "one-person specialty food manufacturing businesses" are adding tremendous vitality to the mix.

So ha ha yourself, haters. And pass the kimchi tacos.

Unemployed New Yorkers: Apply for Sandy Cleanup Jobs! The Brooklyn Headhunter

Gov. Cuomo visits Rockaway Sunday with Congressman Meeks & NYS Sen. Smith
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday that the state has secured a $27 million federal grant that will hire more than 5,000 unemployed New Yorkers to work helping clean-up communities still recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

The funding will be provided to communities to quickly hire young people and the unemployed to help with clean-up efforts.

“The enormous amount of work to be done gives us a chance to provide young and unemployed New Yorkers with job opportunities cleaning up their communities,” Governor Cuomo said.

People who are interested in applying for a job  are encouraged to contact the Department of Labor at 1-888-4-NYSDOL (1-888-469-7365) or by visiting www.labor.ny.gov/sandyjobs.

All individuals must be unemployed to be eligible. Once hired, workers will earn approximately $15 per hour to work on short and long-term projects. The work will include cleaning and repairing damaged public structures and property in each of the nine counties declared disaster areas.

In addition, Governor Cuomo said that the state has partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to launch a local hire program to replace FEMA employees, often from out of state, with New Yorkers. The goal is to hire upwards of 700 New Yorkers.

Individuals interested in applying for a job with FEMA should visit Governor Cuomo’s Jobs Express website at http://www.labor.ny.gov/jobs/regional.shtm

The full-time, temporary positions range from Community Relations Specialists providing outreach to the disaster-stricken communities, to administrative assistants.

Who Won the Third and Final Presidential Debate?

Did Romney scare voters with Iran and China? Did he convince voters our country's global influence is receding?

Did President Obama convince voters their money should go to schools and roads instead of Afghanistan? Did he mention enough examples of Romney changing his positions on important issues?

Who won the third and final Presidential debate?

Vote for the winner in the poll at the top of the column on the right. And then support the candidate of your choice with your vote in the real election.

(Cell phone users: use web browser version of the website, not mobile.)

Big Brooklyn Job Fair Today, April 13, at LIU

On Wednesday, April 13 (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.), Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will host the Brooklyn Job Fair at Long Island University’s Arnold and Marie Schwartz Athletic Center at 1 University Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn. The event is free and open to the public. Nearly 80 employers will be on hand to offer hundreds of available jobs.

“Like everywhere else in the country, Brooklyn is feeling the effects of this economic downturn,” said BP Markowitz. “We’re been here before and we know we’ll get through this. But in the meantime, those of us in government have a special responsibility to do everything we can to get people working again. Jobs are ‘job one’—and jobs two and three. So believe me when I say that what Brooklyn and New York City need to get back on track are jobs, jobs, jobs.”

The Brooklyn Job Fair is presented by BP Markowitz in partnership with Citi, ResCare, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the New York State Department of Labor, and Workforce1 with the New York City Department of Small Business Services.

For more information on the Brooklyn Job Fair and a complete list of participating employers, visit www.brooklyn-usa.org/jobs.

New Website Links NYC Service Providers with Customers

Say you're a dog walker, tutor or a handyman -- in other words, one of New York City's unsung service entrepreneurs.  A new website called SkillSlate  provides a place for you to list your service(s), price, geographical area and customer reviews.

SkillSlate, in an email, tells us they have 650 service providers in Brooklyn "and growing," and they just announced $1 million in venture funding yesterday. So far, there are ten categories of services covered: cleaner, DJ, dog walker, hairdresser, handyman, massage, mover, personal trainer, photographer, and tutor.

The website is new so there are only a few reviews so far. It's funny how seeing a photo of the service provide might influence who you will call. Also, it's amazing to see the big difference in rates. One dog walker charges $75 an hour; another charges $20.

One thing to remember is that handymen who charge more than $200 for a job are supposed to be licensed and bonded (insured). (Here's a handy Dept. of Consumer Affairs booklet about that.) To find out if a handyman is licensed, call 311 or go to www.nyc.gov/consumers

SkillSlate appears to be very helpful to both service providers and those looking for one. Check it out.
