Go Michael Go! Michael Ring to Walk the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday

We've long followed the writings of Brooklyn runner/blogger (What You Do Not Know Because You Are Not Me) Michael Ring, who was paralyzed when he was struck down by Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

Now, the Daily News reports,  he plans to walk the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday.

"That Ring, 52, of Park Slope, Brooklyn, is moving at all is a credit to savvy doctors and his own indomitable spirit," the News reports.

"'His mentality is unbelievable,' said Dr. Jung Ahn, director of rehabilitation medicine at NYU’s Rusk Rehabilitation."

The man is amazing. Good luck and godspeed in your race, Michael!

While Brooklyn Boulders Being Upgraded, Try DUMBO Boulders

Brooklyn Boulders in Gowanus continues to experience "capacity limitations" due to facility upgrades [i.e., building code violations], according to their website.

Seems like it might be a good time to visit DUMBO Boulders in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The facility specializes in bouldering (as opposed to roped climbing). It's the first outdoor climbing wall in the city.

The day pass ($9) includes shoes, the facility's front desk man told the Brooklyn Eagle. “It’s good for the whole day. You can come here and climb till your hands fall off."

Thrills in NYC Harbor for the America's Cup

Photo copyright MK Metz.

The fastest sailboats in the world raced this past weekend in the America's Cup's New York City stop.

The boats were becalmed on Saturday, but the race went on as planned Sunday and the huge crowd in lower Manhattan was thrilled. The harbor was packed with boats filled with spectators.

Emirates Team New Zealand took first, while Oracle Team USA (shown above) came in second place and Groupama Team France third. The race continues elsewhere in June.

America's Cup Racing Comes to Lower Manhattan This Weekend

Want to see some crazy fast sailing? America’s Cup racing will return to New York for the first time since 1920 with Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series racing on May 7-8.

Six America’s Cup teams, with the top sailors in the world, will vie for points that count towards the final competition for the 35th America’s Cup in 2017.

Practice racing is on Friday, May 6, with point-scoring races on the weekend of May 7-8.

The Event Village will be in the Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza, while the racing will be on the lower Hudson River off the Battery Park City Esplanade (between the Pier 25 basin to the north and The Battery to the south).

Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series standings so far (after three events):

Emirates Team New Zealand – 122 points
ORACLE TEAM USA – 112 points
Land Rover BAR – 109 points
Artemis Racing – 105 points
SoftBank Team Japan – 100 points
Groupama Team France – 82 points

History:

From 1870 through 1920 racing took place off New York. Beginning in 1930, the competition was moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where it remained until the United States finally lost the Cup in 1983, ending the longest winning streak in sport.

Since that time, racing for the America’s Cup has taken place in Perth (Australia); San Diego (USA); Auckland (New Zealand); Valencia (Spain); and San Francisco (USA).

In May/June 2017, the next America’s Cup will be raced in Bermuda.

New Marina Opens at Brooklyn Bridge Park; but Now There's a Sailing Area Fuss

Bay Ridge Flats, by NOAA
ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina has just opened at Brooklyn Bridge Park. It's the first new marina in the NYC area in years, and will provide docking for yachts as well as community boating programs and lessons.

But some boaters are "up in arms" because a maritime company wants to install a barge mooring close by, putting a prime sailing area at risk, reports the Brooklyn Eagle.

A moored barge would affect boaters’ ability to race in the harbor, a marina official said. More than 100 sailors from the ONE15 Marina already race weekly in the flats.

A representative from the maritime company told the Eagle, however, that the mooring would be Just one of many.  “I have no idea why they’re so upset," he said.

See the Brooklyn Eagle for more.

Eileen C. Dugan Memorial 5K to be Held in Brooklyn Bridge Park on April 16

Courtesy of Brooklyn Bridge Park
The 18th Eileen C. Dugan Memorial 5K will be held on April 16 at 9 a.m.

Nearly 400 runners participated in 2015.

This 3.1-mile race remembers Eileen Dugan, a New York State Assemblymember who represented the local 52nd AD (Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Red Hook, Sunset Park, and Bay Ridge) from 1980 to 1996.

The race was announced by the The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, St. Francis College, and Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP).

"Her early leadership and advocacy to create a public park on the Brooklyn waterfront were instrumental in making Brooklyn Bridge Park a reality," says BBP.

In 1996, at the age of 51, Assemblywoman Dugan passed away from breast cancer..

"The Eileen C. Dugan run has really taken off since Brooklyn Bridge Park began hosting the event," said her brother, St. Francis College President Brendan J. Dugan. "It's the perfect fit, an example of everything my sister worked for and dreamed could be possible on the Brooklyn waterfront."

For its first 13 years, the Eileen C. Dugan Run was a tradition on the streets of Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. This year's course will begin and end at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The run is limited to the first 500 entrants. All proceeds from the run will support the Conservancy's free cultural, recreational, and educational events.
