Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce's Scissura: Paid Sick Leave? How About Cutting Fines on Small Businesses

Photo: BiblioArchives, Flickr
Carlo Scissura, President and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, sent in a statement on the expansion of paid sick leave in NYC that left no doubt that he's not the bill's biggest fan.

He might go for it, however, if the Mayor will cut some slack for small businesses, such as easing regulations and fines.

He said:

"We applaud Mayor Bill de Blasio and Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito for addressing the needs of all workers in New York City.

"However, this is the first step in a larger discussion about the needs of small businesses and their employees. While we work to address the imbalances of workers, we must ensure that the needs of small businesses - the engine of job growth throughout the five boroughs - are taken into account and addressed.

"Importantly, we look forward to reviewing the bill and working with Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito on the easing of other regulations and aggressive fines that have burdened small businesses for years. This is an opportunity for all Chambers of Commerce to come together and discuss the rights of workers and how to balance that with the needs of small business owners."

New York Citi Bike Is Hiring

Need a job? New York's Citi Bike share program is hiring.

According to the Citi Bike website, a number of positions are open: call center manager, outreach ambassadors, bike mechanics, customer service agents and more.

Citi Bike better hurry -- Sunday was their busiest day so far, with 22,399 trips of 25 minutes each. 4,524 day passes were sold.

Meanwhile, complaints about poor customer service poured in to Citi Bike's Facebook page on Friday:

* "I sent an email several days ago and still no reply. The stations will not let me rent another bike and your phone does not work..."

* "Can we pick up our keys in person?!"

* "I second that. Would really like to pick my key up!"

* "Did u route the calls to India?"

* "Hoping to receive my key soon... I signed up on April 15 and I haven't received anything yet."

* "Still waiting for my freakin' key!!!!!!"

It would seem that customer service agents need to be hired right away.

Health Care Jobs Employ More Brooklynites Than Any Other Field

It's not construction, information or real estate -- it's the healthcare and social assistance fields (shown in green in the chart below) that provide the most employment in Brooklyn, followed by retail (shown in black).

Figures released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis show that in 2009, there were 183,009 healthcare and social assistance jobs in Brooklyn; in 2010 it was up to 191,838; by 2011, there were 198,152.

Not all possible fields are shown on this chart -- the software limited us to 10 at a time, so we picked those with the most workers and those with the most relevance to Brooklyn, including real estate and information.

Note: If SUNY succeeds in closing down Long Island College Hospital, there will likely be 2,000 fewer health care jobs in Brooklyn in 2013.

Let 'Em Laugh: Brooklyn's Food Scene Is Bringing In the Bucks

Smorgasburg in DUMBO. Photo: MK Metz
Haters love to scoff at Brooklyn's trendy food scene, but apparently Brooklyn is laughing, too -- all the way to the bank.

The Brooklyn Eagle reports that Brooklyn's burgeoning food sector is an engine of job growth for the borough, based on a study done for the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce.

Brooklyn’s “food chain” -- supermarkets, restaurants, gourmet food shops and food makers— accounts for 16 percent of businesses in Brooklyn and 12.5 percent of Brooklyn’s private sector jobs.

Restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and grocery stores added one out of every five new jobs in Brooklyn since 2000. In 2011 alone, wages in the Brooklyn food sector came to $1.46 billion.

While not all food-related jobs rack in big bucks, many do -- and start-ups and "one-person specialty food manufacturing businesses" are adding tremendous vitality to the mix.

So ha ha yourself, haters. And pass the kimchi tacos.

Unemployed New Yorkers: Apply for Sandy Cleanup Jobs! The Brooklyn Headhunter

Gov. Cuomo visits Rockaway Sunday with Congressman Meeks & NYS Sen. Smith
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday that the state has secured a $27 million federal grant that will hire more than 5,000 unemployed New Yorkers to work helping clean-up communities still recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

The funding will be provided to communities to quickly hire young people and the unemployed to help with clean-up efforts.

“The enormous amount of work to be done gives us a chance to provide young and unemployed New Yorkers with job opportunities cleaning up their communities,” Governor Cuomo said.

People who are interested in applying for a job  are encouraged to contact the Department of Labor at 1-888-4-NYSDOL (1-888-469-7365) or by visiting www.labor.ny.gov/sandyjobs.

All individuals must be unemployed to be eligible. Once hired, workers will earn approximately $15 per hour to work on short and long-term projects. The work will include cleaning and repairing damaged public structures and property in each of the nine counties declared disaster areas.

In addition, Governor Cuomo said that the state has partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to launch a local hire program to replace FEMA employees, often from out of state, with New Yorkers. The goal is to hire upwards of 700 New Yorkers.

Individuals interested in applying for a job with FEMA should visit Governor Cuomo’s Jobs Express website at http://www.labor.ny.gov/jobs/regional.shtm

The full-time, temporary positions range from Community Relations Specialists providing outreach to the disaster-stricken communities, to administrative assistants.

NY Attorney General Is Worried Con Ed Taking Risks with Public Safety

By MK Metz
Consolidated Edison officials said they would restart talks with its biggest union Tuesday, while a company spokesman defended its handling of the lockout, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Journal notes that for Con Ed, which serves more than three million customers, the lockout is a calculated gamble to control its labor costs.

The company wants to change pension plans for new hires.

But State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman is questioning Con Ed’s emergency preparedness, says the Journal News.

“The bottom line is that without its regular outside plant workers Con Edison cannot be prepared for a storm or a heat failure. I urge the PSC to ensure that Con Ed has the proper contingency plans in place,” Schneiderman wrote Friday.

During last week's heat wave, Con Edison cut power to major swaths of Brooklyn by 5 percent over several days. But cooler weather has helped the manager-workers on the streets play catch up.

Con Ed has begun concealing the addresses on its online outage map to prevent crews from being harassed, according to Newsday.

Con Edison has a 38-year history of boosting its dividend, which currently stands at a 3.9% dividend yield.

The sign shown above, at 1 Pierrepont Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn, instructs Con Ed employees to enter the building using a side entrance. The sign appeared when the lockout started last week.

More Than 9,300 Apply for 1,900 Part Time Jobs at Barclays

More than 9,300 people applied for jobs at the Barclays Center, opening Sept. 28 in Brooklyn according to Atlantic Yards Report, quoting Crain's (subscription).

Job seekers heard about the work from postcards mailed to Housing Authority residents by developer Forest City Ratner, which also visited local churches. About 2,000 jobs are available; roughly 1,900 are part time and 100 full time.

Atlantic Yards Report asks, "Does this mean the arena's a savior, or that Brooklyn has a lot of unemployed people?"

Many of the jobs are likely at the Barclays' many bars, nightclubs and restaurants which will spill thousands of drunken, brawling patrons out into the surrounding residential streets at 2 a.m.
