Spielberg film transforms Brooklyn Heights into DC

Steven Spielberg. By Gage Skidmore, CC BY-SA3.0
- Is that really DC? Spielberg film transforms Brooklyn neighborhood into ’14th Street’ (Photos)

Correspondent Andrew Porter sent the above link (for which he thanks neighbor Steven Rosenstein)  about the filming going on in Brooklyn Heights over the past few days.

Published by wtop, the article starts: "You can spot a cavalcade of boxy Cadillacs lining the curb, and the street sign says 14th Street NW. But this isn’t actually D.C.’s famous strip in the 1970s.
It’s a New York City neighborhood temporarily sent through the time machine for an upcoming Steven Spielberg-directed movie...."

"The film 'Nor’easter' is set to star Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep as legendary Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and publisher Katherine Graham during the time the paper challenged the U.S. government for the right to publish the politically explosive Pentagon Papers in 1971."

Or it might be titled "The Post," as Deadline Hollywood has it.

________

Porter writes:

"This explains the enormous stacks of a 1971 issue of The Washington Post I saw at a staging area on Clark Street.

I guess the guy wanted to use even more BH locations than he got to use in filming "Bridge of Spies."

Then there were the BH locations which stood in for Georgetown in "Burn After Reading." BH has been used way too much in filming movies and TV shows. I'm glad I don't have a car."

Climbing Drills at Ladder Co. 118 in Brooklyn Heights

Ladder Co. 118 practiced their ladder climbs at the Brooklyn Heights firehouse over the weekend.

The drill followed the very real July 4 fire in DUMBO when firefighters from Ladder Co. 118 scaled a six-story loft building at 57 Jay St. to extinguish a fire reported on a lower floor.

You can see photos showing just how dizzyingly far the ladders extended at that fire here.

A small, beloved library in Brooklyn Heights is being demolished.

A few years from now, a luxury skyscraper will take its place.

Park Slope, Brooklyn is as Big as Monaco

Map data copyright Google
Once in a while we play with Wolframalpha.com, the computational knowledge engine, to figure out something pointless.

Today's useless exercise was computing the area of different Brooklyn neighborhoods.

We started with Brooklyn Heights. Wolfram Alpha quickly figured out the neighborhood's area is 180 acres, or .28 square miles.

What's nice is W/A then goes on to give us comparisons:

- The area of Brooklyn Heights is, for example, equal to 1.2 times the total floor area of the Pentagon.

- It's also 1.7 times the total area of Vatican City.

- It is also 13 times the area of the base of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Nice to know!

Plugging in different Brooklyn neighborhoods, we found that Cobble Hill's area is smaller than Brooklyn Heights, at 89 acres.

But the area of Bedford-Stuyvesant, at 4.2 square miles (a whopping 2,700 acres), is equal to one eighth the area of Manhattan.

Whereas Park Slope is 639 acres, equal to one square mile or .... the area of an adult male cougar's home range! Or the total area of Monaco!

To research weird factoids or perform calculations yourself, visit Wolfram Alpha and type in an English language query, such as "area williamsburg, brooklyn, nyc."

Developer Preps Brooklyn Heights Library for Demolition

Workers set up barriers around Brooklyn Heights Library. Photo: MK Metz
Demolition of the Brooklyn Heights Library will be starting next week. Workers from the demo company began installing fencing around the site at 280 Cadman Plaza West on Thursday.

The city’s Department of Buildings (DOB) recently gave its official approval for the demolition.

Locals fought the sale of the library to a private developer, Hudson Companies, for years, but in the end, the city and Brooklyn Public Library prevailed.

A 36-story luxury residential tower is going up on the site. A newer, somewhat smaller library will be built on the ground floor, a mezzanine and on a lower level.

Hudson told the Brooklyn Eagle it has not yet closed on the site, but expects to in the coming weeks.

The Stuffed Animals on Truck Bumpers Thing, Brooklyn Style

Truck drivers have a tradition of strapping stuffed animals on their grills and bumpers.

Some trucker upped the ante, however, with the mannequin above, seen on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights.

Below is another take on the concept -- Banksy's "Sirens of the Lambs" truck stuffed with crying stuffed animals.

Catch the reaction as the truck drives by Staubitz butcher shop in Cobble Hill. (This video has more than 4 million views on YouTube.)

Signs Warn of Subway Pervert Riding Train in Brooklyn Heights

The Brooklyn Heights Clark Street subway station is plastered with these signs asking, "Have you seen this PERV riding the subway?"

The man pictured allegedly exposed himself to a 22-year-old woman on a 2 train as it entered Clark Street station. The man is described as black, age 25 to 35, with a goatee.

The notice was put out by the Guardian Angels PERV BUSTERS team at 718-649-2607 (PervBusters@GuardianAngels.com).

Perv Busters are an all-women team who have trained with Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, according to the Daily Mail.

The squad was formed in reaction to the news that "the MTA will not be deploying officers to handle a recent rise in sexual assaults reported on the subway."

According to the NY Times, reported sex crimes on the subways rose 19 percent last year, to 738 from 620 in 2014.

Hundreds Gather in Adam Yauch Park in Brooklyn Heights to Denounce Swastikas, Trump Graffiti

A huge crowd gathered Sunday morning in Adam Yauch Park on Brooklyn Heights to denounce another Trump-related incident of intolerance.

State Sen. Daniel Squadron was joined by Beastie Boys member Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz, officials and religious leaders to make a statement against the swastikas and "Go Trump" graffiti that recently appeared in the park.

“Hatred has no place in our backyard, no place in our city, and no place in our country,” Squadron said.

"Spray painting swastika's in a children's playground is a messed-up thing to do," said Ad-Rock. See Kimberly Logan's video of Ad-Rock's speech to the crowd above.
