94 Degrees in NYC Today and Lousy Air Quality

Not only does the forecast call for 94 degree temperatures in the NYC metro area today (Tuesday), the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory from 10:00AM until 10:00PM.

Active children and adults, and people with respiratory problems, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors, according to DEC.

The humidity will make temperatures feel hotter as well.

An approaching cold front will give the area a chance for showers and thunderstorms, mainly from the afternoon into Tuesday night.

Thursday: Coastal Flood Watch for Brooklyn, Queens (In Sign Language)

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for Brooklyn and Southern Queens:

A Coastal Flood Watch was declared for Thursday, 5/25, from 7:00 PM to 1:00 AM Friday, 5/26.

The affected area includes the low lying coastal areas. Tidal departures of 1 - 2 feet above normal are expected.

During a Coastal Flood Advisory, minor flooding of the most vulnerable shore roads and/or properties is possible

De Blasio Declares State of Emergency in NYC, Due to Storm Stella and Blizzard2017

 Due to winter storm Stella and the blizzard, Mayor Bill de Blasio issued Emergency Executive Order 92, placing NYC in a State of Emergency as of midnight Monday night.

This order means people have to stay off the roads until midnight Tuesday (or longer) and use public transportation whenever possible.

Those who must drive due to an emergency must exercise extreme caution. Vehicles blocking snow plows will be towed.

Here is a partial list of the things that are closed in NYC Tuesday:

Public schools are closed; after school programs and PSAL activities are canceled

CUNY colleges and central offices are closed

Alternate side parking is suspended; meters are in effect

MTA subway express service is suspended

MTA above-ground subway service is suspended starting at 4 AM

MTA underground subway service is running; expect delays

MTA bus service is likely to be suspended; check MTA.info for the latest status

LIRR service is likely to be suspended; check MTA.info for the latest status

MetroNorth service is likely to be suspended; check MTA.info for the latest status

Garbage, recycling, and organics collections are suspended

Post offices are open; mail will be delivered

Courts, including the Office of Court Administration, are closed

Libraries are closed

ACS EarlyLearn Child Centers are closed

DFTA Senior Centers are closed

DPR Recreation Centers are closed

Some IDNYC Enrollment Centers are closed

NYC Business Solution Centers are closed

Brooklyn Events Cancelled Due to Blizzard: Bedford Union Armory Update, Chag Purim Sameach

NYC Council Member Laurie Cumbo sent out an eblast announcing that some events have been cancelled because of the expected blizzard, part of incoming Winter Storm Stella.

NYC: Prepare For Winter Storm 'Stella' Bringing Blizzard, Up to 18 Inches of Snow

 If you are short of food, beer, cash, toilet paper, meds or any of the necessities of life, Monday would be a great time to pick them up.

NYC Emergency Management is advising everyone in the NYC area to prepare for a nor'easter*, forecast to bring cold temperatures, 12-18 inches of snow, and winds of 20-30mph with gusts up to 50mph. Winds and the weight of the snow could cause tree damage and power outages.

The mysterious governing body that name storms have dubbed this one "Stella." 

Bullet Points:

○ Heaviest snowfall is expected in the morning through the afternoon, with rates as much as 2 to 4 inches per hour possible.

○ Slippery roads and visibility of one quarter mile or less at times. Avoid driving.

○ Coastal Flood Watch from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday.

○ Alternate Side Parking regulations are suspended on Tuesday and Wednesday. Meters remain in effect. Garbage/recycling collections will be suspended once snow operations begin.

○ If this thing drags on, check in on housebound neighbors.

Brooklyn Weather: Tuesday Nice; Wednesday Thunder, Thunder, Thunder

If you have to run around outside in Brooklyn, today is the day. The National Weather Service predicts a high of 57 degrees today, with a 20 percent chance of rain after 2 p.m.

Wednesday, however, is another matter. First, the good news. The high will be around 68 degrees.
Now the bad news:

"Possibly a thunderstorm before 2pm,
then possibly a thunderstorm between 2 & 4pm,
then a thunderstorms after 4pm."

Got that? Possibly thunderstorms before 2pm, between 2 and 4pm, and after 4pm. So, stay inside on Wednesday if you can and make sure you have an umbrella.

A Foot of Snow to Hit Brooklyn Today; NYC Schools Close for Snow Day

 Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina declared that all NYC public schools would be closed on Thursday due to the predicted severe snowstorm, Niko, the Brooklyn Eagle reports. 

It's going to be devilishly tricky to get around at times. According to The Weather Company, snow should become heavy around 8 a.m. in NYC/ Brooklyn. Sustained winds during the heavy snow will likely produce white-out conditions.

Due to the NYC Transit Cold Weather Plan Preparation, certain service changes are in effect, so check with MTA before heading out. 

The National Weather Service says temperatures will fall during the day as northerly winds pick up, drawing colder air southward as the low "bombs."

We take this to mean take the kids (and yourself) out sledding earlier, as it will feel colder as the day goes on.

Hot chocolate for the kids and hot toddies for the grownups in the afternoon!

  The promised snow "storm" has begun in Brooklyn. According to the National Weather Service, total nighttime accumulation of 1 to 3 inches is possible.It should wrap up by 10 a.m. Friday. A winter weather advisory is in effect till then.

NYC Rip Current Risk Still High from Hermine

Dangerous rip current conditions caused by Hermine still exist at area beaches, according to the National Weather Service:

LOCATIONS...ATLANTIC BEACHES OF KINGS AND SOUTHERN QUEENS.

On Tuesday, there's a 20 percent chance of showers after 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83.

Hermine remains a "strong post-tropical cyclone" with high winds, says Dr. Jeff Masters at Wunderground.

The storm, which was 300 miles off the coast early on Monday, appears to be pushing back towards land. Winds "strong enough to knock out power and cause problems near the water will affect eastern Long Island and southeast New England," says Wunderground's Bryan Norcross. Even New Jersey's coast may feel some effects, he adds.

Norcross says Hermine's path was hard for forecasters to predict because it is a slowly moving, meandering storm.

Hurricane Hermine Headed for NYC Over Labor Day Weekend

Data from the National Weather Service's Doppler radar shows that the center of Hurricane Hermine made landfall around 1:30 am along the Florida Big Bend coast just east of St. Marks, Florida,
with maximum sustained winds of near 80 mph.

NOAA predicts it will then head north:

STARTING SATURDAY...TROPICAL CYCLONE HERMINE COULD IMPACT THE [NYC] AREA WITH EFFECTS LASTING THROUGH THE LABOR DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND INTO TUESDAY. MODERATE TO MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING IMPACTS...AS WELL AS HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS...ARE POSSIBLE DEPENDING ON THE EXACT TRACK AND STRENGTH OF THE SYSTEM.

AT THE LEAST...A HIGH RISK FOR RIP CURRENTS AS WELL AS BEACH EROSION WILL EXIST THROUGH THE WEEKEND AND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK.

 The National Weather Service has confirmed that Friday, Saturday and Sunday are going to be temperature hell in Brooklyn and the rest of NYC.

A heat advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. Saturday.
An excessive heat watch is in effect from Saturday morning through  Sunday evenig.

NOAA says:
A HEAT ADVISORY IS ISSUED FOR NEW YORK CITY WHEN THE COMBINATION OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY IS EXPECTED TO MAKE IT FEEL LIKE IT IS AT LEAST 95 DEGREES FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS...OR 100 DEGREES FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME.

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH MEANS THAT THE COMBINATION OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY COULD CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE.

'Life Threatening' Wind Chills of -25°F Possible This Weekend in Brooklyn

According to the National Weather Service, "bitterly cold" and "life threatening" temperatures will move into the NYC area this weekend.

The Weather Service warns people not to venture outside without a hat, gloves and several layers of clothing.

NOAA:
TEMPERATURES SATURDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SUNDAY MORNING WILL FALL CLOSE TO ZERO IN AND AROUND NEW YORK CITY... WIND CHILL VALUES DURING THIS TIME COULD REACH LIFE THREATENING LEVELS AS COLD AS 20 TO 25 BELOW ZERO.

WIND CHILL VALUES LATE SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING COULD LEAD TO FROSTBITE IN LESS THAN 30 MINUTES IF PROPER PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.

Snow/icy rain is not expected until Sunday night.

Meanwhile, temperatures on Tuesday soared to 85°F at Monterey, California, and into the 90°F range across the Los Angeles area, according to Weather Underground. Santa Ana’s "toasty high of 95°F" tied its monthly record for February.

It's Going to Snow Again in Brooklyn on Monday & Tuesday

 The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for NYC from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday.

From 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected on Monday, along with wind gusts up to 30 mph.

Drivers are warned to watch out for reduced visibility and slick roads.

According to a release from the city, as the first storm clears, a second storm system is forecast. Light snow is expected to begin Monday night and will continue through Wednesday. The prolonged snowfall is forecast to taper off Wednesday evening.

A coastal flood advisory is also in effect.

Street Cleaning Regulations are suspended for Lunar New Year for Monday – Meters remain in effect.

One Thousand Still Without Power in NYC, Most of Them in Brooklyn

Following this weekend's blizzard, roughly 600 Brooklyn Con Edison customers were without power as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Con Ed's outage map, the dead spots were scattered across the borough, with Central Brooklyn registering slightly more outages.

Most notably, 115 customers (individual units or homes) were without power in Prospect Lefferts Gardens; 58 in the South Slope; 34 near Eastern Parkway; 67 in Bed-Stuy; 25 in Homecrest; 36 in Ridgewood; 17 near the Navy Yard, 22 in Boerum Hill and more.

About 300 customers lacked power in Upper Manhattan; 100 customers in Queens were also in the dark Tuesday evening.

Depending on the location, Con Ed says many of these repairs will be completed either by 11 p.m. tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Freeze Warning for Brooklyn Monday Night

 The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Brooklyn and other boroughs of New York City (except Staten Island) starting 10 p.m. Monday night through 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.
