Spielberg film transforms Brooklyn Heights into DC

Steven Spielberg. By Gage Skidmore, CC BY-SA3.0
- Is that really DC? Spielberg film transforms Brooklyn neighborhood into ’14th Street’ (Photos)

Correspondent Andrew Porter sent the above link (for which he thanks neighbor Steven Rosenstein)  about the filming going on in Brooklyn Heights over the past few days.

Published by wtop, the article starts: "You can spot a cavalcade of boxy Cadillacs lining the curb, and the street sign says 14th Street NW. But this isn’t actually D.C.’s famous strip in the 1970s.
It’s a New York City neighborhood temporarily sent through the time machine for an upcoming Steven Spielberg-directed movie...."

"The film 'Nor’easter' is set to star Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep as legendary Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and publisher Katherine Graham during the time the paper challenged the U.S. government for the right to publish the politically explosive Pentagon Papers in 1971."

Or it might be titled "The Post," as Deadline Hollywood has it.

________

Porter writes:

"This explains the enormous stacks of a 1971 issue of The Washington Post I saw at a staging area on Clark Street.

I guess the guy wanted to use even more BH locations than he got to use in filming "Bridge of Spies."

Then there were the BH locations which stood in for Georgetown in "Burn After Reading." BH has been used way too much in filming movies and TV shows. I'm glad I don't have a car."

Dunkirk in 70mm Coming to Brooklyn

dunkirk_900x507_SD1_758_426_81_s_c1.jpg
Courtesy of Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn
Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn will be installing a new 70mm projector in their largest theater, with Christopher Nolan’s DUNKIRK as the inaugural film to be presented in 70mm on July 20th. The Alamo Brooklyn is one of just six New York City theaters presenting DUNKIRK in 70mm, and the only Brooklyn theater to show in the format.

From Alamo:
DUNKIRK tells the true story of “The Miracle of Dunkirk” and the unparalleled heroism and selflessness that saved the lives of 330,000 Allied soldiers. Following the earliest disastrous British invasion of Europe, hundreds of thousands of Allied forces and members of high command found themselves trapped, surrounded by German forces and with the sea to their backs.

Enter the “Little Ships of Dunkirk,” a flotilla of 800 privately owned ferries, fireboats and fishing boats, which helped pluck the soldiers from the beaches and evacuate them safely across the Channel to Dunkirk.

DUNKIRK opens theatrically on July 20th. Tickets for DUNKIRK in 70mm are on sale now and can be purchased via the Alamo Drafthouse website .

Expect an Explosion at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Today

Courtesy National Nuclear Security Administration/Wikipedia
New York City issued a notification that a a simulated car explosion is scheduled to take place at the Brooklyn Navy Yard today (Wednesday, August 3rd), in the vicinity of Flushing Avenue between Cumberland Street and North Oxford Street.

The explosion is part of the filming of an unnamed TV series. It will occur only once, the city says, sometime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.  NYPD and FDNY will be on site.

* This is a photo of WATUSI, a real explosion at a Nevada Test Site, not today's car explosion, which will probably seem a bit wimpy by comparison. (Site: Big Explosives Experimental Facility (BEEF))

'Morris From America' to Screen at Rooftop Films in Brooklyn on August 5

"Morris from America" will be shown in Brooklyn on Friday, August 5th, 9:00pm at Industry City (Rooftop Films), 274 36th Street in Brooklyn.

The film is the winner of the Sundance 2016 - Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award; the Sundance 2016 - Special Jury Award for Acting: Craig Robinson, and Official Selection of BAMcinemaFest 2016.

(It's a ticketed event.)

Description from the source:

A heartwarming and crowd-pleasing coming-of-age comedy with a unique spin, "Morris from America" centers on Morris Gentry (Markees Christmas, in an incredible breakout performance) a 13-year-old who has just relocated with his single father, Curtis (Craig Robinson) to Heidelberg, Germany. Morris, who fancies himself the next Notorious B.I.G., is a complete fish-out-of-water—a budding hip-hop star in an EDM world. To complicate matters further, Morris quickly falls hard for his cool, rebellious, 15-year-old classmate Katrin. Morris sets out against all odds to take the hip-hop world by storm and win the girl of his dreams.

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Chad Hartigan ("This is Martin Bonner"), "Morris from America" won two prizes at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award and a Special Jury Award for Robinson, who has been receiving tremendous praise for his touching and nuanced performance in his first dramatic role. Poignant and funny in equal measure, "Morris from America" is a delightfully original take on growing up, following your dreams, and finding your voice.

Writer and Director: Chad Hartigan

Cast: Markees Christmas, Craig Robinson, Carla Juri, Lina Keller
