Trader Joe's Signs Lease at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn

Trader Joe's is coming to Downtown Brooklyn, just about a mile from its popular location at Atlantic Avenue and Court Street in Cobble Hill.

Acadia Realty Trust and Washington Square Partners announced on Wednesday that Trader Joe’s has signed a lease at City Point, located at Fulton Street and Flatbush Avenue.

Slated to open its doors to the public in 2016, Trader Joe’s will be located on City Point’s concourse level, according to Real Estate Weekly.

It will be adjacent to DeKalb Market Hall, a 26,000-square-foot food hall offering between 35 to 55 food purveyors.

Trader Joe’s, DeKalb Market Hall and the anticipated restaurants "will serve as Brooklyn’s most comprehensive food destination," says REW.

The 675,000 square foot retail center's tenants will be anchored by Century 21 Department Store, CityTarget, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and the food purveyors.

Downtown Brooklyn is one of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in the country, City Point says.

Trader Joe's also plans to open a Williamsburg outpost in Alliance Private Capital’s planned mixed-use development at 206 Kent Avenue, the Commercial Observer reported.

Brooklyn Pols Push 10-cents Plastic Bag Fee at Sahadi's

Photo courtesy of Office of Council Member Brad Lander
On Wednesday New York City Council Members Brad Lander and Stephen Levin gave away free reusable bags at Sahadi’s, the Middle Eastern grocery store in continuous operation on Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue since 1948.

The bag distribution was part of a joint effort to encourage reusable bag use and educate shoppers about a proposed bill, sponsored by Council Members Lander and Chin, to place a 10-cent charge on single use plastic and paper bags.

“Local business owners across New York like Charlie Sahadi support a ten cent charge on plastic bags because they know it’s a good policy, and one that will not negatively impact their business,” said Council Member Brad Lander. “Each year, New Yorkers use 5.2 billion carryout bags—over 600 bags per New Yorker —and the city spends over $10 million on the disposal of plastic bag waste."

Charlie Sahadi said, “After careful consideration I realized that this is the right thing to do for my grandchildren and all future generations."

Our opinion: What will New Yorkers use for garbage bags? Plastic grocery bags are the perfect size to throw down garbage chutes. We think this is a give-away to the businesses, as shoppers will have to buy bags anyway.

Times: Wegman's Coming to the Brooklyn Navy Yard

Wegmans
The New York Times reports that a Wegman's market is coming to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

"The 74,000-square-foot store at the Navy Yard will be the company’s smallest by about 25 percent, but will still be about 20,000 square feet larger than the Fairway in Red Hook or the Whole Foods in Gowanus..." the Times reports.

"Wegmans has consistently been ranked the top grocery store in the nation by Consumer Reports and the Food Network, and Forbes placed it among the top 10 employers in the country," they add.
