Empire State Park Walkway Blacktopped

As part of the ongoing work at Empire State Park / Brooklyn Bridge Park in DUMBO, the waterfront walkway has been blacktopped. In the past, this walkway consisted of grass and gravel, with the occasion naval-themed bollard, as seen from the photo taken in 2008, below.

In our opinion, the removal of the grass and gravel and the stark appearance of the blacktop takes away from the beauty and natural feel of the park.

i agree it takes away from some of the beauty. wish they would've kept some green. but i do wish they would do this type of blacktop surfacing on the graveled bike path connecting pier 1 to pier 6. right now the bulk of that path is so uneven it simply makes cycling dangerous unless you have big, fat mountain bike tires.

Not a biker but I always wonder how bikers can ride on that bumpy surface. Though after the recent rains it seems like many of the pebbles washed away...

I think it has changed looks several times. About four years ago it was no fence and no grass--all gravel. But yes, the area by the park has certainly looked better. Personally I like trees and grass in parks. But to each his own. There is no more peace to be had in Dumbo. Things change. Just part of the maddening beauty of this city, I guess.

Is it just me or is the large structure that will eventually house the carousel ugly? It doesn't match the park setting and it is HUGE. Hoping it will look better when they put the glass sides on . . .
