Civil War Dead Remembered at Green-Wood Cemetery
A candlelight march to remember the thousands of Civil War dead buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn took place Saturday as part of a special commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.
Roughly 4,600 Civil War veterans are buried at Greenwood, enlisted men and generals alike. Before the march, re-enacters drilled, told stories of the war to visitors, and mourned their dead.
After it grew dark, hundreds of visitors walked behind the cavalry along the winding roads. Candles in small white bags were placed in front of all 4,600 Civil War veteran graves. At numerous stops along the way, musicians played or choirs sang songs from Civil War days.
Green-Wood did an amazing job with this event. Strangers spoke to each other on the subway ride home about how moving the walk was, and how the Civil War doesn't seem like so long ago any more.
If you visit Green-Wood, stop by the exhibition that accompanied the Memorial Day weekend events -- “Honoring Their Sacrifice” -- in the Historic Chapel, running through June 12.

Brooklyn Bridge Jumper: Daring Rescue Sunday
As the Fire Department set up ladders and a mattress below, police spoke calmly to the young man.
An officer with a rope in his hand, right, climbed onto the ledge but didn't make a move towards the guy. Judging by their manner, the officers were engaged in friendly, almost casual talk. After who seemed like ten minutes of this, another officer, left, climbed onto the ledge. A little conversation ensued.
Then suddenly, the rescuers lunged towards the man, who tried desperately to throw himself off the ledge. The officers struggled mightily, grabbing him under his arms. The officer on the right wedged his leg behind the pipe and held on for dear life. The officer on the left grimaced with effort. Other officers leaned over the railing and grabbed the man, helping to pull him up, up and finally over the bridge railing.
After the officers upended the man over the railing, the crowd that had gathered below broke into loud and spontaneous applause. The rescuers showed great bravery in saving the suicidal young man's life. The man was put in an ambulance. We hope that he recovers from his unhappiness.

Brooklyn Heights Rallies to Keep Engine Company 205 Open
Brooklyn Heights residents and their representatives gathered together yesterday afternoon to rally in support of Engine Company 205, which is one of the 20 fire companies that Mayor Bloomberg, in a weird and inexplicable fit, is trying to close.
Though the population of Brooklyn has been growing by leaps and bounds, the Mayor is trying to shut 8 fire companies in our borough. The amount of fire protection that was once considered necessary when there were actually fewer residents is now deemed unnecessary and unaffordable.
Engine Company 205 not only covers Brooklyn Heights but also DUMBO, a new neighborhood suddenly teeming with residents where once there were only factories and warehouses.
Republicans (and Mayor Bloomberg, whatever he is) say the wealthy will leave if they have to pay higher taxes. But studies show that's not true.
First graders from overcrowded P.S. 8 down the street joined the rally as well. They said that if the school caught fire, the firefighters at Engine 205 would save their lives. They're right.
By the way, the Mayor will be firing several teachers from P.S. 8 next year as part of the city's weird and inexplicable 6,000 teacher layoffs and position eliminations. This while the city is in the middle of losing billions of dollars through waste, corruption and scandals.
Borough president Marty Markowitz said that the first purpose of government is to provide basic services like fire and police protection. He also said that Brooklyn isn't going to take it on the chin.
Councilman Steve Levin remembered the eight firefighters from the Ladder 118/ Engine Co. 205who gave their lives on September 11, 2001:
Lt. Joseph Agnello
Firefighter Vernon Cherry
Firefighter Scott Davidson
Lt. Robert Regan
Firefighter Leon Smith Jr.
Firefighter Peter Vega
Lt. Robert Wallace
Funny, when the Mayor visited the firehouse after September 11th he said New York would never forget what these brave men did for us.
There were many other speakers, including Assemblywoman Joan Millman and actor Steve Buscemi. Read more about the rally at the Brooklyn Eagle
On Wednesday Park Slope residents and representatives held a rally in front of Engine 220. More about that here.

Save Your Firehouse Rallies in Brooklyn Today (Wednesday) and Thursday
Today, Wednesday, May 25, folks in Park Slope are rallying to save their fire company -- Engine Co. 220 -- from Mayor Bloomberg's budget ax.
On Thursday Brooklyn Heights neighbors will be rallying to save Engine Co. 205 on Middagh Street.
In spite of being the fastest growing borough -- with new neighborhoods like DUMBO springing up from industrial areas nearly overnight -- Brooklyn has the largest number of proposed cuts: 8 out of 20 companies.
The Park Slope Engine 220 rally takes place at 530 11th Street at 11 a.m. NYC Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and actor Steve Buscemi (Steve canceled due to a filming conflict) will be in attendance.
In Brooklyn Heights at Engine Co. 205, 74 Middagh Street near Henry, the rally takes place at 1 p.m. You can help by joining the rally and showing your support in an email to Council Member Steve Levin at slevin@council.nyc.gov.
Engine 206 at 1201 Grand St. will also be holding a rally in early June, date not yet announced.

Eight Pins Coming Off This Brooklyn Fire Company Map
Wednesday it was announced that eight fire companies in Brooklyn may close, including Engine 205 at Brooklyn Heights’ Middagh Street. The others on the chopping block are:
E206 1201 Grand St. Brooklyn
E218 650 Hart St. Brooklyn
E220 530 11th St. Brooklyn
E233 25 Rockaway Ave. Brooklyn
E284 1157 79th St. Brooklyn
L104 161 South 2nd St. Brooklyn
L161 2929 W 8th St. Brooklyn
Check out these locations on the map and see if you think there's enough coverage without them.
A report released Saturday by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio shows the cuts to 20 fire companies across the city in Mayor Bloomberg's Executive Budget will seriously imperil emergency response times. According to the report, 18 of these companies will exceed a national 4-minute standard after cuts are implemented—-some by over a full minute. The National Fire Protection Association urges a 4-minute response to prevent fires from spreading beyond a single room, after which the risk of civilian death triples and property damage increases more than eight-fold.
"The neighborhoods targeted by these cuts will see their safety go up in smoke," said de Blasio. "If the Mayor succeeds in cutting these companies, some communities won't meet the response times needed in places like Fargo, North Dakota, let alone a city where we need to fight fires on the upper floors of big apartment buildings."

Saint Ann's Students Among Those Who Torched P.S. 29 Playground - UPDATE
Further UPDATED here.
At least one Saint Ann's School student has been arrested in connection with the torching of the new playground at P.S. 29 in Cobble Hill, according to the Daily News and Carroll Gardens Patch.
Max Laytan, 16, son of film distributor/ producer Charles Layton, turned himself in to cops Tuesday. Sources told the News that four of nine teens involved in the incident attend St. Ann's, but an article in Carroll Gardens Patch reports that only four teens were involved: Max Layton and Bairn Sweeney, both 16, along with two other neighborhood teens. CGP says they surrendered to fire marshals at the 76th Precinct station house.
The Brooklyn Eagle reported last week that the teen perps told their parents the fire was "an accident."
According to CGP, the kids were trying to create a YouTube video of one of them sliding through a trail of fire. Oops!
“The parents feel awful,” Brooklyn attorney Sam Gregory told the Brooklyn Eagle. “They contacted me and said they want to facilitate a way to get the playground replaced. Fifty-thousand dollars was wired into my account today. The kids will be working a long time to pay their parents back. They’re terribly sorry.”

Cabbie Viciously Rapes Passenger in Brooklyn -- Still On the Loose
In the latest outrage (the trial of two cops accused of raping a taxi passenger as they escorted her to her apartment is still in progress), a 26-year-old woman who had just celebrated Cinco de Mayo at the Public Assembly in Williamsburg stumbled into a cab in the wee hours, glad to be heading safely home. But the man driving the yellow cab was a monster who -- seeing she was tipsy -- viciously raped her and cut her up with a knife.
According to the Eagle, "It is unclear why the NYPD and city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) are unable to track down the driver, or at least the vehicle, using the GPS-locator device that is installed in each yellow-cab."
The TLC's response to the Eagle is inadequate and infuriating. See the whole story and the perpetrator's sketch here.
And be very careful getting into taxis.

Schools Chancellor Walcott Agrees to Re-Do Botched Parent Ed Council Election
On Thursday he agreed to redo this year’s Community Education Council (CEC) elections.CECs are the parent bodies that replaced the old local school boards, and they are virtually the only way that parents can make a difference in school policy.
The first round of voting -- the parent "straw poll" -- was "unfair, provided inaccurate candidate information and excluded a number of parents who wanted to run," according to the Brooklyn Eagle. After pressure from parent groups, Walcott agreed the thing was botched and approved a do-over.

Brooklyn Eagle Smacks Down NY Times About Absence of Walentas in DUMBO Story
Dennis Holt of the Brooklyn Eagle lashes out at the "the very large and prominent" story on "Bringing Up DUMBO" in last Sunday’s New York Times, which makes "no mention whatsoever of anyone named Walentas — David, Jane or Jed."
Within the story were seven colored pictures, and 22 different people or organizations were identified, Holt says.
"But the real failure of the story was the absolute lack of history and perspective," Holt writes. "How Walentas came onto the scene, the disappointments in major clients bowing out, his gutsy decision to go to housing, his subsidizing retailers to set up shop so that newcomers had somewhere to shop, and his major focus on supporting the artist and performance industries."
Holt goes on to pen a "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" takeoff. Read the whole story here.
